I need to bring in my pistols for the "safety inspection".  I was just looking at Oak Park's website and they charge $5 +$1 notarization fee for the green card.  Do I have to buy a seperate one for each pistol or can I use it for multple ones?  I've got to bring in a couple rifles as well that fall below the 30" mark so I'll have to submit those as well.  This process is a hassle.

I just took a pistol into Oak Park and registered it. No charge. However, the clerk dropped it on her desk twice. Then she wanted to know " how much you pay for dat?"
I told her I didn't think that what was her business. Her response was she had a "Walter" but it was too big and liked mine.

I asked about re-registration because my green cards have fallen apart. She said guns should be re-registered everytime you change police chiefs. Go figure.

You can't make up stuff like this.

Guns are not registered they are safety inspected and you do not need to reregister when there is a new chief, she doesnt know what shes talking about...  If you move within the state of Michigan you do not need to have them reinspected again at the new PD either....

I know they are safety inspected and not registered.  I was just quoting Oakland Cty.

Oakland County
"If you live in one of the communities patrolled by the Sheriff's Office or the Michigan State Police, bring the firearm into the Records Bureau of the Sheriff's Office. Make sure the weapon is unloaded and encased. It may also be helpful to bring prior state registrations (if applicable). We may need to hold the firearms overnight to conduct a record check on it. If the firearm is clear (not stolen, etc.), a Safety Inspection (gun registration) card will be issued. "

Q: "How much you pay for dat?"
A: "Drop it one more time and you'll find out"

Come on...let's not fool ourselves.  It IS a registration.

Every time I bring in a pistol they open the box, get the serial number, make small talk, and print up the green card.  A real safety inspection is never completed.

So it will be a walk in, walk out deal or do they need to keep them overnight?  The hassle for me is I work in Livonia so not enough time to stop by before or after work, as they are closed.  I just started so I can't take any time of for 3 months.

I would invest in a phone call/ e-mail to AG's office. As I understand it the hours are supposed to be "normal business hours". Closing at 4:00 PM is a little shakey in my opinion. The AG can order compliance to register during all their hours of regular business.
You have nothing to lose.
By the way, a police sargent or Lt. actually looks at the weapon, while in the box!

So at some point, someone needs to sue the state or the PD when an unsafe gun has a failure.  After all, it was "safety inspected", right?  The PD is in essence, certifying the gun as "safe" when they give you the green card.

Pistols in Michigan are definately NOT safety inspected because none of the people behind those counters are qualified to perform a safety inspection.
Call it what it is- REGISTRATION.

The purpose of the safety inspection is not to make sure the pistol is safe, it is to keep Black Legion members safe from getting shot by their black victims.

If a black man presented a pistol for inspection it was unafe and taken away, if carrying sans inspection he was jailed.

The reason was after the 1925 and 1926 cases (retrial) Dr Sweet was legally allowed to defend his family from the Legion when they attacked his home with his family inside (Sweet was black).

The safety inspection law was put into law in 1927.

On the back of the green card it states that its not a "functional" safety inspection, so the lawsuit would be thrown out.

According to the AG's opinion, NO Dept can charge you any amount of money for the registration, they can only charge you for the Notorization, and you have the option to go elsewhere to have your card notorized. Go to the bank you bank at all the time and ask for a notary, they will most likely not charge you.

You have to get a seperate safety inspection for each pistol.

I wonder if you can go to the county sherrif's station instead of the local PD and get it registered there without the hassle.

I second the call and email to the AG's office, the opinion also states that each department that has a records department that and pistol registration, MUST be open for it during all normal buisness hours for members of the community.
The more we pound the AG's office with this issue the better the chances we get on having non-compliant deaprtments start to follow theguidelines.

If your city has a PD you must take it there.
You can only go to the county IF you do not
have a local PD.  I have a friend who lives in
South Lyon and have to drive all the way to the
Oakland County Buildings whenever he wants to
register something, talk about a royal PAIN!

Safety inspection = registration

The computer screen reads at the top:

"MICHIGAN AUTOMATED PISTOL REGISTRATION"  If you dont believe me look at it next time you take one in.

(it says that in Saginaw county anyway)

I know it is registration...
I was joking jeeshh.

Listen...  It could be worse, we could not be allowed
Class III, Hi Caps, AOW's or Carry permits.

We have to deal with the silly registration and now
SBR/SBS (which sucks) BUT it could be a HECK of a
lot worse!

How about carrying that little green card? I've heard that I do anytime I'm carrying also I've heard that I don't have to.

No, you do not have to carry the card.
You MAY get delayed someday if you do not
have it, the officer has a reason to be upset
and the computer system was down to verify
it was your pistol.  You should keep the green cards
in your safe and keep copies of them in your file
cabinet.

I do not carry the card, have never been asked for it
or anything....

Thanks, I keep mine in the safe. I saw a guy the other day who had 2 or 3 of them in his billfold. They were looking mighty tattered. Now I can tell him he doesn't have to carry them.
