I am graduating in less than a month and then will be moving from the UP to Ferndale/Oak Park.  I am a MN resident so I need to change my residency, apply for DL etc.  How long do I have from the time I become a resident do I have to safety check them?  Also, do I just take all the firearms that need to be checked?  I've been in the Up and keep up on the laws and know I must safety check rifles under 30" minimum OAL.

Ferndale is rabidly anti gun. Live somewhere else. Seriously.

I think it's 10 days, but I'm not positive. Do not dick around in Ferndale with being late.

From MCRGO FAQ's/Ask the Lawyer:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Q:   I recently purchased a handgun with my CCW permit. My question is how many days do I have to bring my new handgun to the proper authorities for a safety inspection from the purchase date?

A: There is no time period specified in the statute. The “safety inspection” statute was seen as complementary to the “license to purchase” statute and that statute requires a person to return the completed license to the issuing agency within 10 days of the purchase. I think that the legislature envisioned the safety inspection being done at that time. Since you are exempt from the license to purchase requirements, there is no specified time for the safety inspection. The law would presume that you must do it within a “reasonable time”—whatever that is. I would suggest that you do it within ten days, but that is advice and not “law”. !

Ferndale is also going to charge you $10 per purchase permit.

An ex dealt with them, and even I was taken aback.

If you can help it AT ALL, don't live in ferndale.

Yeah, and you'll have to change your username to "Gerbil_Master", too, if you get my drift.

It's the "alternative lifestyle" capital of southeast Michigan.  I hope surprise buttsechs or man on man public affection doesn't offend you too much.

To legitimately answer your question....they will probably "keep" your handguns for a period of time, once you bring them in for registration.  I don't believe that Michigan code specifies a period of time in which you have to bring them in, other then you must bring them in within a reasonable period of time, whatever that may be.

They will retain posession until such time that they are staisfied that the lawfully ownerd personal property you presented to them to be in compliance with the law is actually yours, has not been reported stolen, or used in a crime.   They will run a check with FBI.  They will be treated like property in an evidence locker (...not well).   If you are really lucky, they'll give you a receipt by make, model, serial number.  Otherwise you'll just have to trust them.  They will try to charge you (illegal).

If you can, I'd try to go another route.  You may even want to consider trying to register with the county sherriff instead of the FPD to try and avoid the hassle.

You must have it pretty bad where you are at to actually WANT to come to this God-forsaken shithole...

Live up here.  If you have enough pistols we send someone to your place to check all the serial numbers instead of having you bring them all in.

You only have to register them once so if you can stay with someone else for a while and get you ops at that address you can register them in that local.  There isn't a specific time frame for someplace being a residence.

When you move you go change you address at any SOS office.

Whatever happened to that bill to get rid of the stupid registration?  I called my Congressman but I never heard what happened.

No word and I have had trouble finding the specifics on it.

Stuck in committee.  Is your congresscritter a member of the Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources?
HB 4490
House Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources

If you support the Bill and if your Representative is on the Committee, call and write him/her to ask that HB4490 be debated, voted upon and sent from Committee.  I doubt that your voice will be heard by the committee members just by posting here.

We're living down by the Detroit Zoo.  My first purchase will be a safe.  I already have the alarm system installed.  I'd be in a world of hurt if anyone broke in.  I'm going Monday to the SOS up here in the UP to change my address.  Once that happens, I'll safety check them up here.  That will save me hassle later.

  1) As far as a safe, a fire will not be your primary concern where you will be living.

  2) I'm just North of you so shoot me an IM if you need any local info., I'm busy but I'll help if I can .. (places to eat, drink, etc..)

 Oh.. Welcome aboard

Where's the best place to go shooting.  I was talking with a guy I'll be working with and the place he goes only allows 1 cartridge per magazine.  That'd be no fun in the 1919, mg42 or vickers.
