Are there any good informal shooting spots (public land with a backstop, old gravel pit, etc.) in the greater Metro Detroit area?  I'd like to blast some water cans, water jugs, etc., stuff they won't let you do at the local DNR range.

From what I hear from guys down your way, the pit in Lapeer is probably going to be your closest spot. It is a free fire zone with no range nazis or assinine slow fire rules.

Ya gotta keep your eyes on the other shooters though because some of them seem to be graduates of the Darwin Academy and just waiting for their chance at an award.

Good luck.

The PIT is great..... But please pick up what ever you shoot up.  At least try to take back as much as you brought.  It gets pretty bad out there with everyone shooting the garbage and leaving it.

My last time at the pit (early a.m., solo) I practiced speed shooting, movement, and reloading. Spent half my time scanning all the crap on the ground searching for my spent mags.

If anyone wants some company the next time they head up there, I live near Ann Arbor and would appreciate a thread here or an IM to get a few people together.  A good friend of mine is also a member of ar15 and would probably come with.  We have... 4 pistols, 4 rifles... couple shotguns... and a partridge in a pear tree.
