The hunting guide says you can not be on state land with a firearm during certain dates without a hunting license. Because, obviously you could be hunting even if you said you werent. This is understandable. My question is this, do I need a hunting license to shoot at the pit in Lapeer? I would assume yes, however, you can not hunt with a rifle in that part of the state anyways (I think, I'm not sure where the line is because i'm not a hunter, but I think it's farther north than that). So if you can not hunt in that part of the state with a rifle, would you get busted for having a rifle on state land during hunting season? Would I not need a hunting license to shoot there if using a rifle because I could make the claim that I was not hunting because rifles are not allowed there? Also you can not take a rifle with a magazine capacity over 5 on a hunting expedition. If I have a 30 round mag in the rifle at the pit target shooting, can I get busted for that during hunting season? Do I have to have hunter orange on while at the pit this time of year? If the hunting guide rules do not apply to the pit, then why not if it's state land. Any help would be appreciated! I do not have a hunting license but would like to shoot at the pit. |

I was there today. It was nuts... there were people in and out constantly. I don't think one car stayed there more than 15 minutes, there were over a dozen different groups. None of them wore hunters orange, a few of the cars had "kids" with evil assault weapons (SKSes and such), didn't seem like the hunter type. I was there, I don't hunt... no license. Then... this truck pulled up. A Dodge Ram 1500 with two spotlights. WTF? Says DNR with a map of Michigan on the side... oh shit! I was the only one there at that point. His windows were tinted, couldn't see in. I stared at the truck for a good minute wondering "ok... what'd I do? He must be getting papers or something, to give me a ticket, or calling for backup because I have an AR-15." laff I walked over to the truck and it was this big dude. "Uhhh, are you shooting?" (I pretty much knew he wasn't.) "No, just GPSing the parking lot." (had a handheld GPS deal in his hand) "Oh, good! I figured I did something wrong." He laughed 30 seconds later he left. So, basically... don't worry about it. He didn't care and it was obvious I wasn't a hunter. |

You do NOT need any hunting license to target practice on state land. http://tinyurl.com/744br Answer No, a hunting license is not required when target practicing or sighting-in a firearm at an identifiable, artificially constructed target, and there is no attempt to take game. This applies to both state lands and private property. The law that previously required you to have a hunting license under certain circumstances to transport a pistol to a target range has been repealed. |

Hey Mitchell, Are you from that part of the state? I live in Lansing but am in the Flint area for work occaisonally. Let me know if you want to meet up there sometime and shoot. I have an old laser printer that has been giving me some trouble. It had it's last paper jam! I was going to give it the old 5.56 attack and thought this would be a good location! |

I go to school in Flint 6 months of the year, I try to go shooting whenever anyone else is willing to, but going alone isn't as fun. Yesterday I was going to go with a couple other people who backed out... as always. The last two times that happened, I didn't go, but yesterday I decided to go alone. It was fun. I avoid the place on the weekends as it gets more crowded, and with the kind of people I don't want to shoot with. That being, guys who use their beer cooler as a benchrest between beers. I'll go almost any time, but I'm only here for another two weeks before I'm off school. I've yet to find a decent place to shoot near where I just moved to in Plymouth (near Ann Arbor). There's a place right near by but they have a "only one round in the gun at a time" rule. I'll try to remember to PM or Email you before I go out the next time. Next weekend I'm hoping to go to an ACTS shoot, but I have yet to buy a holster for my 1911 and I can't even affoard $20 right now I'm so broke. |

Mitchell, dont worry about needing a holster for your 1911 for the next ACTS match as I am bringing 2 holsters for ppl that dont have any as I will also be bringing a web gear set up also for that purpose just bring your guns and mags & bullets and your good to go as is anyone that wants to try it. |

Mags for the AR at least 3, if you only have one I will let you borrow some of mine.I will have pistol mag pouches on the web gear set I will be bringing to the dec match , so your covered there. and as far as round count , bring say 200 rifle and 50 pistol . better to bring more and not need it then to bring less and not have it. As far as what to gear to buy check out what the other ppl are using and see what works for them before you spend any money on gear. and get ready to have a great time! |
