I posted this in a different section, probably the wrong one.  So I thought maybe some of you in my home State could help me out.

My wife will be graduating from grad school soon and has asked for a list of States that I am willing to move to. Curretnly I live in Michigan where the gun laws aren't too bad, yet. We'll see what our new governor comes up with.

Since I'm into IPSC and just got into AR's, I've already eliminated the obvious States, Kali, New Jersey, New York, Conn., Mass. etc. I do have a fair amount of money invested in preban mags and some firearms that would not be welcome in certain States.

Does anyone here have suggestions on States to avoid when it comes to gun laws? No this isn't the only consideration in moving, but it is very important. I'm not giving up my new AR or any of the other firearms that I enjoy because I'm moving.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Scott

AR's are legal in Il today, although I'm not sure about the Chicago area. This state just elected a totally Democratic govt in the last election, and they've only been in power a month. I hate to say it, but you better stay away. Mostly just flat cornland anyway. Good luck.

Things in MN are just OK.  ARs are legal & I don't think that any firearms are specifically prohibited by state law.  We have "may issue" CCW & the statistics show that very few are issued in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.    Most are issued in the rural areas.  (There was an article in the Red Star Tribune a few months ago & you may be able to research it at www.startribune.com.)  The good news is that we have a Republican governor who wants to change the law to "shall issue."  There is no open carry that I know of although I've carried a 22 pistol on my hip rabbit hunting.

The downside to MN is that it is unusually liberal.  (It baffles me that we actually elected a Republican governor.)  We will continue to see our rights chipped away.  Also, the people here are very unfriendly & exceptionally reserved & passive aggressive.

As far as nearby states:

Wisconsin has a Democratic governor & is much the same as MN except that the people are somewhat friendlier.  The state is bipolar in that Madison is ultraliberal & Milwaukee is somewhat conservative.  The areas north & south of Milwaukee are somewhat conservative also, as are the rural areas.  Of course, there are a lot of Democrats trying to live off the government in MKE.  The Secr of HSS, Tommy Thompson, cracked down on welfare when he was the governor of WI, & that may have cost the Republicans the governors office.  WI just voted down CCW last year.

I don't know about Iowa or South Dakota gun laws, but the people seem OK.

North Dakota has somewhat liberal gun laws in that you can carry a shotgun or rifle uncased right beside you in the front seat as you drive down the road.  (MN law requires that all guns be cased & out of reach of the driver.)  I don't know about their CCW or open carry laws.

As far as hunting, MN public land is poor at best & WI is the same.  The exceptions may be in the far northern parts of both states.  IA & SD, of course have a reputation for good pheasant hunting.  I don't think that deer hunting is too bad either.  SD is reputed to have good waterfowl hunting also.  ND has good waterfowl hunting & fair deer hunting, but most of the land is wide open & the only reason that the deer hunting is good is because there aren't a lot of deer hunters.  ND pheasant hunting is only fair at best.  The trespass laws are getting worse in all of these states.

Good luck!
