I graduated from the Tennessee Lawenforcement Academy some years ago (2002).

Will I need to complete a handgun safety course offered by a handgun safety school that is certified by the Department of Safety if it was that long ago?

I retired from the Army and then went into Law Enforcement.

I've tried to research it and came up dry.  I assume I'd need to qualify with a handgun within a certain time.  It's been 4 years since I went through weapons qualification.

Thanks for the help.

Tennessee Code Annotated Section 39-17-1351 (e) says:

An applicant shall not be required to comply with the firing range and classroom hours requirements of this subsection (e) if the applicant submits proof to the department that within five (5) years from the date the application for a handgun carry permit is filed the applicant has:

  (1) Been certified by the peace officer standards and training commission;

  (2) Successfully completed training at the law enforcement training academy;

  (3) Successfully completed the firearms training course required for armed security guard/officer registration, pursuant to § 62-35-118(b); or

  (4) Successfully completed all handgun training of not less than four (4) hours as required by any branch of the military.

What do you think - do you have to do the firing range time or not?

I've known a few people that have used police/military training to opt-out of the live-fire requirement, and the consensus is it's easier to just go ahead and shoot.  You have to do the classroom part anyway, and apparently getting the live-fire exemption is a pain in the ass.

ETA:  I see from the post above that the classroom portion isn't required for police/military either... I wonder if that was changed recently?

It's easier to just go ahead and do the live fire. 50 rds is no big deal.

Especially if the gun and ammo are furnished by the instructors. We used Walther P22s to qualify, and I'd bet that Stevie Wonder could have passed the range portion. We DID also get practice in clearing misfeeds, so it was like bonus day!
