His link leads to a pic of Haslam and this article for me: Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) & State Sen. Frank Niceley (R) Gov. Haslam says he will consider a Tennessee plan to secretly arm and train some teachers, TPM reports. The legislation will be introduced by State Sen. Frank Niceley (R) next month. |

I really wish they would stop saying "arm teachers". They should allow any school faculty member that has a carry permit and goes through some specialized "school shooting response" training program carry their gun at school. It would be similar to the federal flight deck officers program that allowed trained pilots to carry on board planes. It's a lot cheaper than hiring a bunch of new cops or guards. When they say "arming teachers" they make it sound like it will force teachers to carry. It should be voluntary and the staff that participate should only be known to certain school administrators. I would rather see coaches, admin, and maintenance staff carry. If teachers choose to participate, they should only protect those in their immediate area and not try to "clear the building" or hunt down the shooter. I'm sure the experts could come up with a good training program that is well suited to likely scenarios. Good to see the TN Gov is moving in the right direction on this. At least some politicians are considering solutions that will actually have a chance at working rather than just knee jerk call for gun bans. |

I want to see a bill put forth like the Wyoming legislature did. That will prosecute any federal agent trying to confiscate semi-auto weapons or trying to arrest one of that state's residents for possessing them. Yeah, I read that, gave me the warm and fuzzies. What happened to the Firearms Freedom Act from 2009ish? TN passed a bill that firearms manufactured in-state were basically out of jurisdiction of the federal government as long as they stayed in the state. The ATF sent letters to all the FFL's flexing their muscle... was that the end of it? We've made good progress over the last few years. Carrying in restaurants and parks, loaded long arms in vehicles for handgun permit holders, this year they're going to try again at telling companies that weapons can be stored inside employee vehicles. More reasons I love it here. |
