EDIT: This is to be used as a thread from now on for members to post when they are planning on heading up there to shoot, so that others may join if possible.
Planning on saving up for a membership for my birthday this year as my friend so his land we used to shoot on. Went out and visited the place, seems very nice and extensive. Any of you guys meet up there for a fun shoot? -John |

There are several MSSA members here in the hometown forum.
We need to organize a get-together shoot soon. There were several hometown members at the Defensive handgun class @ RangeUSA that were asking about MSSA and I know they would like to check the place out. I will see what I can get stirred up. LB |

I would like to get involved in some shooting competitions and have a place to stretch my legs with distance. It would be nice to start a thread for when people are going up there (one I get a membership of course I heard they are pretty strict on some things, like no holstered sidearms, period. Stuff like that. But it will be worth the sacrifice. |

From their rules page (link) they have this.
15. Drawing from or carrying of handguns in holsters of any type is not permitted on any firing line.

Quoted: I have several friends who are members there, and Stg Major Norris, was my instructor in High School ROTC, and the shooting I was on. Just hard to give up the money to join........ What is it running now? You just dated yourself, son. ;) When I was in JROTC (on the rifle team also, when they still used .22 match rifles), he was the go-to guy in area shooting. East High, Class of '78, btw. A few years back, I had him install a Douglas barrel on my NM M1A receiver for me. He and the Mrs. have retired to Arkansas. Greers Ferry Lake, I believe...? Good man. HKO |

Yep, very good man.
I was in ROTC with him from 68-71, Trezevant HS. Honor Guard, and Rifle Team. Were would play, Country Joe, and the Fish song....."I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die" in the Officer's room. Till he would holler at us..... Boy, if I could just go back... "Those were the days my friend....."..... |

"Those were the days my friend....."..... Oh, THAT is funny!!! Especially at that time. "Gimme a F! Gimme a U! Gimmie a..." ;) I imagine y'all were ROFLAO! Yeah, those days in JROTC were some of my favorite memories of high school (OTHER than standing in formation, in the heat, in those damn wool "monkey suits"... :/ My first year, our drill rifles were M14's, "de-militerized" ONLY by having the firing pin removed....!!!! Plans were hatched...... but the Army realized it's error, and they were gone. :( I am also a member of MSSA. I don't remember if you've come out to any of the local get-togethers. I know you post. You need to come on out. We'd like to meet ya, and we'd LOVE to check out your vehicles. Drive one up to the range, maybe...? :D You're out here in Fayette, right? HKO |

That applies to the covered firing lines. You can draw and fire all you want on the action pistol range. |

I have been traveling so much, that when I get home, there is a LONG list of honey do's to get done. Both of my Halftracks are just frames right now. Gathering parts for them The 57mm cannon needs the left hand shield, and I will have most every thing for it. I really need a fairly large garage that some knows about to be able to work in. If anybody knows someone that would let our local group (or just me) use one, PLEASE let me know. The Local club I'm president of has serveral vehicles that need to be finished, but no where to work on them. There are a lot of empty places where comapny's have gone out and the bld is empty but I do not know anybody that has one. We would keep the bld up and move out when it is rented. We're just a bunch of old guys that like military stuff, and try to keep history alive. We take stuff to schools, and Vet's rememberance things like they did last year at Collierville, and Overton Park. If ANYBODY know of one, even a small one please let me know. I am 3 mile across the line in Fayette county. |

I would love to join MSSA but haven't for two reasons -the $$$ is ridiculous and they do not appear to be very NFA friendly (FA shooting allowed "with proper supervision"???).
I can shoot my subgun FA at Range USA for a lot less money, I can shoot silenced there, I can even shoot my AR there on Sat nightt if I want to pay for the frangible ammo... |

I can shoot my subgun FA at Range USA for a lot less money, I can shoot silenced there, I can even shoot my AR there on Sat nightt if I want to pay for the frangible ammo... The up -front price of the initiation fee and background check are expensive, but keep in mind that MSSA is not a huge facility and they are the only outdoor shooting range in Memphis. The closest public range is at Natchez Trace state park. If just anyone were allowed to shoot at MSSA, it would be so packed that members would have to wait for hours for a lane to become available. MSSA is a wonderful facility full of good people. It would not stay that way for long if it was open to the public or if they did not do background checks or have an initiation fee. MSSA stresses safety first. Most of the members are very safe. If it was dirt cheap to join or open to the public, safety would go out the window. I personally do not want to be muzzle swept by Bubba with his loaded Raven .25 auto, or by Elmer and his .30-06.
Most people that can afford a nice AR can afford the one time, up front fees if they really want to. After that, the yearly dues are cheap. For what you spend on one night at the indoor range you could shoot all you want for a month at MSSA. And I am sure you know that silencers sound a whole lot more quiet outdoors than they do indoors. They are NFA friendly, and you can shoot your SBR's, silencers, etc. whenever you want to. They only restrict full-auto to designated shoots or supervised by certain rangemasters. Maybe as more members join that own NFA weapons, and younger NFA owners get on the board of directors, we can get that rule amended, or let members get certified by the rangemasters to allow them to fire after they prove that they are safe and proficient with the "happy switch" on. ( Much like the qualification to shoot on the 600 yard line.) Go by there sometime and take a tour. I can guarantee that if you do join, you will not regret it. |

I went memorial day as a guest -had an absolute blast (pun intended).
I am scraping my shekels together and will be a member very soon. The price is a bit high but if it keeps the riff-raff out I'll pay it. Its cheaper than golf. Nice place not far from the house too. |
| I stopped by last Friday and the 100yd lines were closed, a disappointment. Action pistol with be closed for about another month while they improve the drainage. When it reopens we should get together on a Saturday morning. I've probably seen a few of you there and never realized it. I'm the guy who always brings his GSD (see avatar). |
|
I was out there last Thur and action pistol was closed but the 50, 100, and 600 yard ranges were open. They are doing a lot to the action pistol ranges. Reseeding and other things. I am going tomorrow (Thur) morning around 10 am and taking my oldest daughter and a boy who is a member and a friend of the family.
Anyone who who likes to shoot and can swing it should get in the club. It is a paradise out there. |

Well, I finally joined about two weeks ago and have been out about 6 times since. Everyone I have met were really nice, including a crew of AR NM shooters.
I'll be gone this weekend for a wedding but whoever of us are members should arrange to meet-up sometime soon. -John |

I have been about 8 times. I like going late sunday afternoon. |

I was thinking about going this Sunday if anyone is interested in meeting up.
Also, if anyone has a Glock 17/34 and/or a S&W M&P9 that is willing to let me run a magazine or two through it in exchange to fire anything I have to offer, let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. -John |

Is everything back up and running? Someone was telling me they were operating out of a make shift office because of flood damage. I haven't been since the flood, but need to get out there. Aug. 29 is a three gun shoot that I am going to attend. I want to see what it is about and would like to get involved. |

looking forward to it fellas. just rilfes and pistols? Yup. We can start with rifles. There is a practical pistol match until 3:00 pm, but maybe after it is over, if it is not too crowded, we can go to the action pistol range and shoot some steel poppers. Bring extra pistol ammo just in case. See ya'll at 1:00 |
