I may have an opportunity to move there.  I love the idea of moving to TN.  It sounds like a dream after living in Maryland.

My wife and I are planning a visit later this month to check a few things out.  Any recommendations on where to live or not live?  Any observations on the area would be great. I like what I am seeing, it looks like a good place to raise a family.

Thanks

Dont Live in East Ridge (prone to flooding,) Alton park (bad crime,) most of Brainerd (unless you dont mind being the cream of the Oreo and dont mind a little crime), Dont live in Highland Park (lots of crime, prostitution and such) Red Bank is old and rundown

I like Olltewah, Collegdale, Signal Mountain, Harrison.

I really like Hixson, and im currently looking out in Dunlap (Sequatchie County) Its 30 minutes from downtown but out in the country and still close to some civilization. I beautiful out in Dunlap. If you are moving from Maryland and selling a house, you should get a really nice house here. If you are looking for work, find a job first! If you are retired, they are trying to make this a more retirement friendly area.

Oh gun laws are great! Especially compared to Maryland! I didnt like Chattanooga at first but I never got out of the city limits, When I moved to Hixson, I started loving it here. I am glad I moved here and dont want to move back to Florida!

Thanks for the advice. I will check out the Signal Mountain area and Hixson. I am also looking in the Nashville are, but I like the mountains better.

I live outside DC currently and we have a serious crime problem, plus terrible gun laws.

Avoid buying in the city limits of Chattanooga. They are going crazy with taxes right now. My choices would be Ooltewah, Harrison, Apison,  I also like Bradley and Miegs countys. Don't procrastinate, the VW plant is already driving the real estate prices up.

What about East Brainerd?

Lots of traffic, and I drive it everyday right now and I HATE it. I hate it when when I have to drive out toward Apison and it goes to one lane. Traffic is Hectic, definitely made me rethink wanting to move out towards Apison. I think property is more expensive that way being close to the mall and all the shopping places.

As a general rule, I like living north of the river if possible - Soddy Daisy, Hixson, etc.  Avoid Red Bank.  If possible, try to live in the county outside the Chattanooga city limits.  Ooltewah or Collegedale are worth looking at if you need to be on that side of town, but avoid the Brainerd area.  Signal mountain or Lookout mountain are worth considering.  If you are looking for more acreage, Rhea or Sequatchie county will have better land prices/taxes, and are an easy drive to Chattanooga.

Thank for all the insight. I have a lot of research to do. I think I will be looking to stay out of the city limits. I've got more than my fill of the "city" in Maryland.

Don't forget the north Georgia area, Ringgold, etc.

North Ga and you pay Ga state income tax. I lived in Chatt while I was in college. Plenty of beautiful places. really nice downtown, some realy good parks too. Big enough place to where nearly everything is right there but small enough to where you don't feel like you are in a big city. An hour and a half from Atlanta, an hour and 45 mins from Nashville. Really not a bad drive either way.

Ya, I believe it is 6% state income tax, you pay 1 or 2% less in sales tax. But then you also have to put up with all the horrible GA drivers and the ugly clay landscape. I personally dont like GA, can you tell?

Probably still good deals on property north of town. I live off HWY 58 north of Harrison and like it out that way. The VW plant is near me and who knows what will happen when it gets underway. I expect traffic to increase along with development in the Harrison/Ooltewah area.

Any idea ofthe area where you would be working?

I live in Ooltewah and the wife and I love it here. I grew up in North GA and moved to downtown Chatt when I got out on my own. It was nice while I was a single guy but now that I am married and starting a family I really like being out a little more. I don't know what your needs are schools, employment, and etc. Like everyone else has said stay out of Brainerd and East Chattanooga everywhere else will have its pros and cons based on what you are looking for.

Thanks for the insight.  I'll stay clear of Brainerd and East Chattanooga.

Got me to thinking.   How far is it from Cleveland TN drive wise?   Just wondering if Cleveland or somewhere in between there and Chatt would be good......

Dunno.

I've lived in Maryland [Annapolis '96-'97] and I've lived in Chattanooga since '05.  I love it here.  Chattanooga is a great town for me and has about the right number of people.  I will tell you that we haven't got much in the way of ranges over 100 yds unless you can make a friend at the Chattanooga Rifle Club.  Prentice Cooper is a great free range just try not to go on weekends during the busy times.  Chattanooga has been rated as one of the best cities to live in which is true unless you have serious allergy problems [springtime can suck].  If you have any more questions feel free to pm me.

ETA: I'm not sure if you'll be working downtown or not [I do], but avoid Hixson Pike/Barton Ave. if you can for a way into downtown.  Where I live this is the easiest way in but it has speed cameras

For gun stores in town my two favorites are Sportsman's Warehouse [Lee Hwy] and Skip's Firearms in Ooltewah [www.skipsfirearms.com].  There's also Sportsman's Supply on Hixson Pike and Carter's Shooting Supply on Hwy 58 which both have annual membership pistol ranges, but I don't much care for the management of either.  Signal Mountain is mostly for "rich folk" from what I know, but I don't know much about what you do, but driving up and down Signal or Lookout mtns really sucks in winter if it ices over.  Personally I really like the Soddy Daisy/Hixson area.

ETA2: Cleveland is about half an hour from Chattanooga.  There's Benton Shooter's Supply as well as another good free range in Benton [very close to Cleveland] as well as a 3gun/IDPA club.  There's another IDPA club at Dodd Training [www.doddtraining.com] and a little birdie told me there may be some IDPA goings on at CRC.

Depends on where in Chattanooga you are going.  About 30 minutes with good traffic to the east side of the city (Hamilton Place/Hwy 153), about 45-60 minutes to the west side of the city (downtown area).

Edit:  Ooltewah and Collegedale are between Cleveland and Chattanooga on I-75.  Both are nice areas.

I live in Crofton for now and spend a lot of time in Annapolis. Sounds like good advice.
Thanks

The previous posts pretty well nailed it. Look at Ooltweah/Collegedale, Hixson, & Soddy Daisy. Brainerd is nice as well but the traffic can be a problem. However, on the plus side, Brainerd is very close to shopping and restaurants.
