Everyone needs to blow off a little steam around the holidays due to the influx of in-laws, relatives & general hubbub of activity......................

These things are a LOT of fun & all one really needs to shoot are a $25 Fobus holster, eye & ear protection, ammo & they're good to go.

Are you up for shooting steel on the move, speed steel, static steel, falling steel, moving and shooting steel?  Approx 150-200 rounds, 5 stages of action steel shooting. And after the match is over, the KING OF THE HILL SHOOT OFF. Bring extra ammo!

The match is based on the wildly popular Tues. Nite Steel matches at the Rio Salado range in AZ and the major match Spring Steel at Rio.  Great training for all of the pistol sports you shoot. We are shooting in USPSA skill class and gun divisions.  The KING OF THE HILL SHOOTOFF   follows the NTPS Steel match and will be a man vs. man double elimination format.  The winner gets possession of the KING OF THE HILL traveling trophy.

Set up is Sat. Dec. 19 at 9am at the NTPS range in Dickson and practice on the range thereafter.  The match is Sunday Dec. 20 with first shots at  9:00am. Registration opens at 8.

Match fee is $20 with $15 going to the NTPS steel fund and $5 for range rent to the landlord.

Sounds fun as hell.  I assume you would need a couple mags on your side as well?  Would be fun to try with the USC ;')

Usually no more than one mag is needed as a spare if it's a hi-cap. Some shooters simply dump a mag that has a jam if it's during a live fire stage rather than attempt to pull out the problem rd.

There's normally 5-6 plates on a rack & then a pepper popper to knock down. However, this one sounds like there may be a 2nd stage with static steel plates?

I'll try in a bit to get the link up to the host club's web site so folks can get directions & whatnot.

For those whom may not know, there's almost always two shooters at a time going head-to-head against each other. The go by a best 2-out-of-3 & shoot a round robin (everyone shoots against everyone else, usually). The one who knocks down all his/her plates & has their pepper popper on the bottom wins the stage.

I've seen guys with single stack 1911s with shitty OEM sights beat race gun shooters. Sometimes the race gun guys get a jam & it takes them a few seconds to get the thing cleared, sometime many, many seconds. The trick is to NEVER give up on a stage because you don't know when a guy's going to skip over a plate on his/her way in a hurry to the pepper popper.

Everyone who shoots these matches always has LOTS of fun! Well, everyone except killthewabbit, who got once got beat by Stevie Wonder & his seeing eye dog........................

The cool thing about these matches are is you don't need a lot of equipment or a race gun to be competitive, never mind just shooting & having fun. These types of matches are priceless in their simulation of an adrenline dump when one has a boo-boo. Shooting at a range w/paper targets & thinking that helps one prepare for STHF is simply wishful thinking at best & downright dangerous at worst, IMO.

Some of THE best things one can see in TN is when the open class (race gun) shooters square off against one another.

Hope some folks think about coming out, if nothing else just to watch. Bring a lawnchair & a bottle of water. A jacket is always a good thing to have in TN in Dec., IMO.

Web link to follow later.

Yes................

Many use 9mm to lower muzzle flip & to have a quick follow-up shot. Many use .45acp to ensure a plate knock-down with a glancing hit. Single stacks can work IF one can run the rack w/o any misses. If one will miss from time to time, then a 10rd 1911 mag is suggested.

Best 2-out-of-3 normally require 2-3 mags per gun so as to not have to reload mags between strings of fire. Been there, done that. Calibers must be centerfire, no rimfires!

For those whom are interested, they're setting up the Sat. before the match & will allow workers to practice for a while. This makes a huge difference if one has never shot a plate match before, IMO.

Hope some folks decide to come on out!

bump to remind folks to mark their calendar. No doubt someone will be ready to blow off some stress of the holidays as much as I will be.
