I'm moving to the Knoxville area from Virginia, where I have a valid VA carry permit. Does having a permit from another state help when it comes to applying for a TN permit? I'm guessing it doesn't save me any money, but I wonder if it gives me credit for any of the training requirements?

I don't think it does, but I would hit the Tennessee Firearms Association for some definite answers. Or, call your Knoxville office of the State Dept. of Safety & ask them about the requirements.

Good luck & welcome to TN!

You still need to take the class, so that the Department of Safety is ensured that you've been exposed to the laws of the State.

Virginia
Applicant must complete the application, pay $50.00 fee and provide proof of fingerprinting in Virginia. If proof of fingerprinting cannot be provided, the applicant must pay the one-hundred and fifteen dollar ($115.00) fee and be fingerprinted.

(Virginia requires the applicant to complete a safety course.)

from this page at the Dept of Safety.

You learn something new every day.  I was told that, regardless of from where they moved, new residents had to take the class.

I've always wondered what would happen if/when I move back to TN.  I still have my old TN handgun permit.  So it's my proof I've taken the course.

GA has what's called a firearms license, but it takes a trip to the court house for an app, and then to the sheriff's office for prints.  And then it comes in the mail.  It used to take the place of the NCIS check and fee, but now it doesn't.
