I have a job opportunity in Memphis. Most likely I would live south or southeast of the city, and I'd like unfiltered comments on the area (schools, real estate, crime, weather, cost of living, or anything else you feel is worth mentioning). I'm doing the usual internet research, and would have at least one trip to check things out, but your insights are appreciated. For what it's worth, I would be moving my family from the Minneapolis area, and have previously lived in Austin TX for the better part of a decade. Thanks! |
| That is one of the better areas. Collierville and Germantown are going to be your best be if you want to live close. If you don't mind 20-40 min drive Fayette county or Desoto county in north Mississippi is where you want to be. I would spend a week here driving around and looking. I don't have kids so I cannot say too much about that but my wife works for a private school in Collierville I can get you some info on if interested. |
|
Germantown and Collierville are definitely your better bets. Agreed on the Germantown attitude. I lived there for the better part of 5 years or so, and there is definitely a sort of 'better than you, i'm more important' attitude there. Not overly prevalent, but it is there. Germantown used to be the suburb of the city where all the money was, but that is changing. Germantown drivers will piss you off because of their sheer lack of awareness more than anything else. |
Unless you are well south, or well east (don't fall into the "southeast Memphis" trap, you gotta go further, lots further), my unfiltered comments (at least unfiltered to the point that Hank might not hit me We were in C'ville, and while relatively nice, it wasn't far enough. Anything Shelby County is gonna eat you up on taxes. Be prepared for culture shock. |
| while DeSoto co (MS.) is close and nice, be ware that MS has a state income tax that you may not know until you move there. I along with HKOVERKILL will tell you that Fayette Co. (just east of Memphis) is THE place to go. UBER LOW taxes and great appreciation(sp) on property!...............good luck |
| In CO we have open carry and concealed carry in your vehicle is fine, no CCW license needed. I can drive around with my AR on my front seat with a loaded mag in place (not chambered) and I am fully within the law. AFAIK you cannot do that in TN. If I get my CCW in TN, can I keep my rifle loaded in the front seat? |

Before you move to Memphis take a good look at this. Crime stats Combined with a corrupt city govt to include about half the city council Federally indicted right now and a high poverty rate I would not move my family to Memphis. Feel free to email me if you want more info. |

Thanks for the link to the crime stats. Crime and violence in the area is my primary concern. I'm curious as to how far out from Memphis proper the problems exist. My office would in south Memphis (near the airport), and I am certain we'd live at least as far out as Germantown or Collierville, maybe further. Would you still have the same concerns? As I mentioned above, I currently work in Minneapolis (no great place as far as crime is concerned), but live about 25 miles from downtown, and crime near my home is not a problem. I'm wondering if Memphis would be similar. |
| "Across-the-muddy" person chiming in here. I live in Marion, AR just across the river in Arkansas. All of Memphis is as accessible from here as it is from Desoto County or Fayette County. I work in SE Memphis and my drive is 26 miles door-to-door and about 35-45 minutes time (it takes me longer to drive Hwy 78 from my work up to I-240 than it does to drive I-240 to my house). Crime is low, public schools are highly rated, and housing prices are still under average. |
I live close to Oakland. I have 5 acres 3 miles across the Fayette county line. i have lived here since 85. This is a good area, close to Memphis, but away from all the trouble. |
| I live in Southaven MS and drive to school in downtown Memphis everyday and it takes me about 20 min. We really like it down here and the airport area is only about 15 minutes away. The public schools are ranked at the top of the state year after year. There are some nice areas down here but the less expensive neighborhoods are filling up with memphis evacuees. It wouldnt hurt to check out the Southaven, Olive Branch, Hernando areas. One of the main reasons we like it is that with the growth down here we have everything we need without having to go into memphis, but it is just right there if we want to hit a grizzles or redbirds game. We do have income tax even if you work in TN, but the lower property taxes and sales tax probably come pretty close to balancing that out. PM me if you have any questions about the area. |
(Start Hijack) Holy crap, man. Bet you've seen "a bit" of change in the last few years? ![]() You in Hickory Withe? I've got 5 acres just northeast of I-40 and Hiway 59 (Longtown). (End Hijack) HKO |

Oh, I know right where you are at. Buddy of mine owns the rest. in Mason in the old hardware bldg. I'm at 193, and 196 area. MANY changes. I got my 5 for $12,500. NOT anymore ... another change I do not like I miss Sheriff Kelly. Not many places where you can pick up the phone and just call you Sheriff |

For those of you moving to the Memphis area, do not overlook Tipton county, TN. Depending on where you work in Memphis, you may be able to get to your jobs quicker or just as quick as living in Collierville or Germantown or North Mississippi. You will get alot more house for your money in Tipton county, and taxes are very low, crime is very low, and Brighton public schools are good. Fayette county is great too, but I have heard the public schools in Fayette are not as good as Tipton county. DO NOT move to the City of Memphis unless you like high crime, extremely high taxes, awful racial tension, bad schools, and a Mayor that is oblivious to the city's problems. There are a couple of other ARFCOM'mers that live here in Tipton, and if you want more info, send me an IM. Herman |

Both my kids went to public school in Fayette, Son finished 6th in his class and received a scholarship to UT. Daughter finished Valedictorian, and received a full scholarship to anywhere she wanted, took Univ, of Memphis. This was before lottery and they had to earn scholarships. School is what the kids and parents make of it. Teachers knew they could call us and we'd not chew them out for calling. |

I'm a lifelong Memphian except from '89-'95 when I was in college (Univ of Alabama) and working in Birmingham & Atlanta from '93-'95. Came back home to work in the "family business" and all I can say is that Memphis has gone down the shitter. I live in the smack in the middle of Memphis (near the U of M) and my wife & I are planning a move to Hernando within the next 12 months. Bottom line is that Memphis proper is a terrible place to raise a family if public education & low crime are priorities. Germantown, Collierville, Tipton & Fayette Co., and Desoto Co. are much much better in all regards. No place is perfect... |
Don't worry Rictus. Me and HK and Pappy will be glad to help you load the moving van. (HK, you distract him while me and Pappy load the blue thing into my truck.) |
+1. I go through Tipton Co regularly. Nice place. If you end up east of Memphis on Highway 64, learn to observe the posted speed limit signs religiously. If you end up in inner-city memphis.....pack your stuff and go back North. Memphis a corrupt, crime-ridden town, to say the least. |
If you're going to Memphis, you aren't anywhere near the Tennessee that you might THINK you're gonna be living in. The state may as well sub-divide itself into two parcels. Memphis/Shelby County, and the rest. Actually, I bet the whole rest of the state would welcome the idea of disowning Shelby County and all of it's associated problems (and drains of public resources...). Good luck.... |

. We are looking forward to living in TN., I just wish the gun laws were a little bit better.
