For those whom may be interested, there will be a steel plate match in Dickson at the IPSC range on 1 Apr. For those whom may not know what's involved, I can tell you these things are a HUGE amount of FUN!

There are two shooters at a time, mano a mano, facing downrange. Each have their own targets, upon starter signal both commence drawing & firing. First one to knock down all his/her plates wins that match. Best two out of three determines the match winner. Men shoot against women & vice versa & some folks will be better shooters than others. Just a fact of life, kinda like the real world.

There is NO elimination, a shooter will shoot against everyone in his/her squad. Even if one gets smoked every single time, they keep shooting.

This particular match will have two stages, as I understand it. One is a static plate stage, i.e. no falling plates, but they bounce when hit. The other stage will have the traditional falling plate rack with the pepper popper in the middle of both racks.

The match dudes TRY to keep the race gun guys matched together & the production guys together, thank goodness. No one is made fun of (except by their buddies    ) and every one is a good sport. Whining is not only discouraged, but downright ridiculed.

For those who have always wondered what it would be like to walk down Main Street & face off with a bad guy in a quick draw, this is as close as one can get, legally.

At the end of the day, they do take the upper X% of shooters & have a single elimination shoot-off to determine the King of The Hill shooter. Pretty impressive to watch the race gun guys shoot against each other, IMO.

Match starts at 9am & entry fee is nominal, around $25 or so. Might want to bring LOTS of ammo if your aim is as bad as mine..........

Even if you don't shoot, it's worth your while to stop by & watch. I've learned a lot regarding weapons, gear & technique watching the better shooters.

Directions to the range can be found at www.ntps.org

Don't feel like you need to be Wyatt Earp to shoot, the very first match I went to was the TN state championship match. Needless to say, I can in DEAD LAST..........  But, I damn SURE had FUN all day!!!!

Hope some of ya'll can make it!!!!!

Hey Bob, thanks for telling us about this!  I've got a few questions.

First, the site you linked was great, but has no 2007 info. (Looks like it was last updated about a year ago.) Do you have a name and number for a main contact person to get details?

Second, I don't have any centerfire pistols, just a bunch of revolvers in 38, 357, and 44.  Can these be used? I also don't have a holster of any sort for them, just an uncle mike's nylon holster for a full size semi-auto (a gift) Is a holster a requirement?

Ok, I guess the main thing I'm getting at is that I don't have much gear right now (broke, starting a business, yadda yadda yadda) but can I still come along and give it a try? I REALLY want to try some sort of competitive shooting, and this sounds like something I may be able to actually do!

Thanks for your help!

Yeah, here.

Seriously, I can't give out Brian's e-mail address w/o his permission. But I'll be happy to address any & all of your questions.

Sure, but reloads will indeed be a mofo, IMO. There's 5-6 steel plates & then a popper on top of that on one stage. So unless you have a 7-8 shot revolver, you may have to be a Jerry Miculek of S&W fame.

I also don't have a holster of any sort for them, just an uncle mike's nylon holster for a full size semi-auto (a gift) Is a holster a requirement?

Hell YES, a holster is required! Safety FIRST, FOREMOST & ALWAYS!!!!!

Actually, a $20 Fobus holster can get you by. I've used one several times & they work okay for me.

Well, I do have a H&K USP 9mm I can let ya borrow. Holster & mag pouch too, since I'm SUCH a NICE fellow. (SHUT-UP, Hank!     )

You WILL need ears & eye protection as well! Mandatory!
Ammo is on you, though............

Bob, I'm sorry I didn't reply to your super-nice offer.  I couldn't get to a computer all weekend!  I was really tempted to just skip church and go shoot, but I've got responsibilities there.  Do you guys ever have Saturday matches, or any another day of the week?

Thanks again for your offer! I really appreciate your willingness to help somebody you've never met before!

BTW, how did you do yesterday?

Which side of town are you on?
There are serveral IDPA matches around town on Saturdays.  They even have a revolver class if you prefer.

Well, barring some unforseen MIRACLE, I think I may have finished DEAD LAST........

It got SO bad, some of the regular shooters were doubled over laughing at me.........

However, the GOOD news is, I took 500rds of ammo & only brought home about 40rds.............

Keep on the forum & I'll post the next steel match as I hear about them.........

As Mike has mentioned, Manchester has regular IPSC/IPSC matches & Dickson does IPSC as well. Dickson shoots both Sat AND Sun, so if you're tied up on one day, perhaps the other day would work for you?

Hope this helps!

MCShooter, I'm in Smyrna, southeast of Nashville.

I'm going to spend some time later in the week hunting down some Saturday competitions in the near future.  Thanks guys!
