Wow! I have been shooting on the west side of the lake 4-5 times in the past 2 months. There are a million people out there now. There are even people setting up shot and selling jerky and stuff.

Today we were in an area and a  3 cars full of hispanic people show up. Their kids had bb guns and kept walking down range of where we had set up and trying to shoot. It was getting dangerous and I don't know much spanish so we left.

I wonder how long until there is an accident of some other event out there. I guess I need to head further west.

Where do you live?  A few years ago I would go across the lake all the time; I figured it was the only place to go. But there are other places, it just depends on where you live.

I used to go out there and be the only guy around. you could shoot 600+ yards if you wanted. Everybody also took down their own crap for the most part.
Sorry to hear it.

It is flat out fucking scary to shoot out there now. I am with the above poster. I started shooting out there about 14 years ago, it was great. Now after a few incidents of flat out stupidity I don't go there anymore. People pull 50 ft off the road and don't shoot into a backstop. Then people are in the direction they are shooting . I give it less than on year before someone is hurt or killed by some jackass wanting to play rambo with his new $900 Wasr.

I was there one time and some retards were shooting at clay pigeons from down below, throwing their clays up the road that goes into the mountain. We were getting pelted with birdshot and it stung like a bitch! We'd hear "boom boom boom boom!" ... "tic tic tic tic ping tic" of the shot landing on our cars. Keep in mind the mountainside was full of people, this was a saturday morning.
Finally a got in my truck and hauled ass down that rutted out road and jumped out, there was about 10 guys with shotguns, all pointing to other people. "I wasn't shooting up there.. it was him" (points to guy next to him).
At least they stopped shooting up the hill. This was about 2 or 3 years ago

my experience across the lake is the same.

had been shooting there from about 1990 till 2 years ago.

now I have access to a much nicer place.

no idiots, no ricochets zinging past me and my kids,

no urge to shoot back.

when will Utah County set up a reasonable range?

How many golf courses do we need,

and no decent place for people to shoot?

Utah County has 3 "decent" ranges, the Utah County Sheriff's range at Thistle in Spanish Fork Canyon is open every Saturday to the public, the Provo Squaw Peak range is open most Wednesday and every Saturday to the public for $2 (15, 50 and 100 yard ranges).  The Garth Kilpatrick memorial range in Hobble Creek Canyon (50, 100, 200 yard ranges) is open every other Thursday and Saturday starting in April and only costs $10 per year!

Did you know about these facilities?

I went there yesterday...
There were some idiots that planted their selves right in the middle of the trails and they were shooting both directions... I had to squeeze through them with my 4x4 and I just gave them a dirty look while working my way up top.

bunch of fuckin idots...

I never even try to go there on the weekends.

My sources tell me that Thistle may not open to the public this year due to county budget cuts,

though they are now having IDPA shoots there each month.

I know about Provo and Hobble Creek, but by decent, I would refer to the Carbon County range here:

http://www.carbon.utah.gov/north_spring/index.htm

600 and 1000 yard rifle ranges, 65 shooting tables. Heating for year-round shooting.

I mean really, Carbon County's population in 2000 was 20,000,

and Utah County's population back then, 350,000?

Utah County gave millions to help fund Thanksgiving Point, but they can't build a range

that's accessible to the public more than a couple days a week?

Tell me about it.  My company, Action Target, provided all of the range equipment and target systems for the Carbon County range (close to $400k).  I've heard that the oil in Price/Carbon County provided a lot of the funding for the project.  We're running out of room in Utah county for a range of that scale.

I was talking to a SWAT officer prob a year ago, and he said that you can shoot anywhere that’s at least 600 feet away from any structure, with a safe background of course. I also was told that if you’re not in any particular city’s limits its legit, given the rules previously mentioned. So it that is true then there are all kinds of places to shoot in Utah county.

If anyone as specifics (written laws or rules) about these rules that would be great!
