In 2 weeks I'll be arriving Boise to visit some family. I've never been anywhere near this part of the country... any recommendations on things to do/places to see? I've heard the night life is pretty good. I'll be heading north to McCall for a few days as well to get in some snowmobiling Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

I just visited Boise with my girlfriend a few weeks ago.

You absolutely, positively must take the tour of the Old Idaho Penitentiary.  For $5 per person it's one of the most interesting tours I've been on.  The real kicker is after the guided tour is over.  The J. Curtis Earl Memorial Exhibit is one of the finest collections of weapons you will ever see, including almost every weapon used by any side during WW I & II, as well as some modern stuff, including a Stoner 63.

Old Chicago in downtown Boise is a good choice for pizza and beer.

Friends of mine have also recommended the Warhawk Air Museum, but I have not made it out to Nampa to check it out yet.

There are superior local places downtown for food and drink. Old Chicago is a chain. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

What would be some better places to check out for food/beer? And thanks for the links... I'll see how much of this stuff I can check out!

I wasn't all that impressed with them.  Their pizza wasn't much better than any other chain,  However, if you go to Flying Pie be patient with the hippies that run the place.  They don't know shit about customer service and they will try to get you to put all kinds of weird shit on your pie.  The counter girl got kind of bent out of shape when I told her I just wanted italian sausage and pepperoni and nothing else.  I know their whole thing is gourmet pizza or whatever their drug addled minds come up with but I don't want peanuts or spinach on my pizza,

Alot of people I know love the place, but be warned, the counter help is a bit lame, upkeep of the place is lacking, and their prices aren't all that great.

***To echo what others have said, again, if one's coming to Boise, they might be better served to sample the local chow and not hit a chain restaurant - Goodwood BBQ is not only excellent "upscale barbecue", and great example of a well done restaurant (you'd think it's a chain, but it's not) but it's local to boot - locations in Meridian and Boise.

If you're looking for uniquely Boise kickiness, Donnie Mac's Trailer Park Cuisine is a fun little slice of kitsch and pretty good burgers to boot.

Mai Thai (Eagle) has a fun Thai lunch buffet, and good sushi as well - nice mellow big city atmosphere - try the Fish on Fire and the duck roll sushi.

Madhuban - zero decor, nothing spent on theme. Just good Indian food.

Almost swaying from my "no chain" theme here, we did *just* get a Tucanos (opened a couple days ago).  Small, new Utah chain (four locations total - two SLC, a location in NM, and now beautiful cosmopolitan Boise) that takes the Brazilian steakhouse thing just a little bit downscale for a lower price point, but still a fun churrascaria.

+1 on Flying Pie, go on Gourmet Night if they're still doing that, and sample a mess of the different slices.

I believe Goodwood has a few locations in Utah as well. The brisket is damn good!
