yesterday the high was -8 and the low was about -18
looks like it will be a little better today but we still wont break 0 wind chills down to -35 -40 i usually dont mind the cold its just the damn wind.. oh and i gelled my truck last night on the way home i had the correct amount of additive in it and she still froze up. |
|
working on it now. took me forever to find some diesel 911 because everyone was sold out!
put some in the tank and then some more in the filter. its idleing right now and ill go test drive it in a half hour. ill probably have to change the filter but hey its worth a shot |
|
You guys are colder than we are. We are in the 30's Saw Billings was -19f last night. I can remember that a few times. Dad was telling me of -40f and -30f for over a month when he was younger . Remember windchill will freeze even fuel. Enjoy our cold. Stay safe. |
|
brrrr! well i put diesel 911 in the filters and let it idle for 1/2 hour but it was still clogged up. so i got the truck into the garage late this morning and just now got the filters changed. i took it for a spin and it drove fine. i had to put the code reader on it and clear the check engine light. GM petroleum requested a sample of the fuel to send to their lab so i threw some in a jar. ill get it to them tomorrow or the next day.
im still a little grumpy that this happened but oh well what do ya do? |

We were -22 last night, high today hit -11. Supposed to be just as cold tonight. For some reason I was not ready for it this year. Battery on the 4 wheeler died, so that bites. I can run it to feed the stock and such, but if I try and use the plow it will die. I hope to get to town tomorrow.

I switched to Howe's a couple of years ago. Even at -30 I have not had a problem. I did have issues when I used Power Service. Mine gets parked for days outside, and I start it without a block heater. I do tend to go through the batteries though... those 3 year full replacements come in handy every 2 years.. :)

Did you get your fuel from a station that does big rigs or the ones that do both gas and dsl?
What year of chevy? Fuel is affected by wind chill. Is the fuel you guys getting the low sulphur? People in Anchorage had trouble with the low sulphur #2 when it got below 30f. Older dsl pickups the pumps wear faster because of it. |
|
02 Dodge 24 valve, bought powerservice treatment for 100 gallons, poured in 2/3 of it which SHOULD have been twice as much. The fuel, on second checking at the pump, was #2.
Hardly anyone around the Flathead sells 50/50 #1/2 or #1, though I will search a little harder. I just dont think that #2 is worth it when it is -10 or more below. Ed |

Usually around here the main stations that carry the mix, or kero, are the Exxon ones. They have to be the bigger ones too. Helena only had one truck stop there, and it closed down earlier this year. It does have the bigger Exxon station which is where I get my kero. For fill ups I usually head to Great Falls and there are 2 very large and very busy truck stops there.
When I was back east you had to be careful during the early part of winter. If the station did not get enough business it would say it was winter diesel, but it was not. Hence I used a couple of very busy truck stops. -Corn |

The stations around here (Bozeman) have just switched to mixed....
I started to jell on the way to work yesterday morning. It pulled down to 40mph but I managed to get to work. The clock on the bank 1/2 mile before I started having problems said -25 .
This morning it ran constantly for 45min before I hit the highway and it did just fine even though the bank said -23 this morning.... I have been running about twice the PS white bottle that they recommend when it gets this cold. Be careful with the stuff though, the pencil injectors on CTD's will get hurt if you put to much in or run the red bottle all the time. |

Sunday night here was -27, with a high on Monday of -11. Today it was +4, so it was rather balmy out.. :) Yes, growing up here I remember it being a lot colder, for a lot longer, and with more snow that it has been for the last 10 years or so. Maybe my memory is faulty..

Max: from here it looks like you are running a PS/DMAX/ Or Cummins?? Lay off the Power Service.. Go down to Cross P and get some FPS. The Power Service is nothing but solvents.... STAY AWAY....... Did I make my point yet??? What is up with Power Service, I have been using it regularly since Montana went to no sulphur Diesel and my Cummins shit an injector pump as a result. What is FPS? And yes I am interested in the proof, my email address is in my profile. Ed |

You know in Russia and Mongolia they build small fires under their trucks to thaw the diesel.
Just thought I would mention that, I'm not suggesting you build any type of flame or fire under your vehicle. Just be glad you are not in Wisconsin where negative is just what it is when it is not summer (June - August). |

**A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW...BLOWING SNOW AND DANGEROUS
WIND CHILLS REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM MST THIS EVENING.** AREAS OF SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES INTO THIS EVENING. IN ADDITION...NORTH WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WILL COMBINE WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING BELOW ZERO TO CREATE DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS OF 20 TO 30 DEGREES BELOW ZERO THROUGH TONIGHT. 1 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED ACROSS THE AREA. THE SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS WILL TAPER OFF BY EARLY THIS EVENING. You were saying.....

It is -18 here already, no wind chill needed. I did have a nice walk and ski this morning at -8, which now seems quite balmy. :) It was snowing pretty good in Helena this afternoon, but we are not getting it up here. We did get about 5 inches last night, but that was it.
Now I am just trying desperately to find some pump kerosene for my heater. I refuse to pay what they want for a can of it at Home Depot. -Corn |

i googled it and couldnt find many places that sell it. looks like there is a cross petroleum in glendive and sidney.

You do know the coldest temp in the lower 48 was recorded in Montana not Wis. |

So what should I guy in w.Or do for his `01 Cummins when it's 32 and below? I know this is t-shirt weather to you guys, but around here nobody knows how to deal w/even moderate cold.
In the 7 winters I've owned my truck I had never used the block heater `til now. W/lows in the the teens and 7yr old batteries it works like a charm- the glow plugs cylce off a second after hitting the key, like summer. I keep the rad blocked every winter as the truck will NOT get warm otherwise and even on a 50 degree day it won't get past center gauge. I don't drive it much and it only has 30k, is there anything I should be using on a reg basis? As an ex (gas) mechanic I shy from additives as they're generally BS, but as an old mech I know that the removal of critical componants in oil formulation has killed more flat tappet cams in the last 3ys than the prev 20. This makes me think I should be doing something. You guys are the diesel experts so here I ask. Asa side note, the 12+ inches of snow we've had in the last few days has been awsome, though wimpy by your standards ( & mine- I want to move!) it's the most snowfall Portland has had since `68! Everybody stays home and I "own" the roads, lots `o fun! |

sprguy,
If you have been reading this then you have a lot of information already. Additives with the new ULS diesel is a must. If you cannot find the FPS, then I would suggest getting Howes. Mix per the instructions. You also need to figure out if what mix, if any, of diesel they sell in your area as their ability to not plug your filter, or gel, and at what temperatures varies. Yes, a block heater does help. Unlike most, I don't use mine, much. I don't even worry about it until -10. I have started it at -30 without too much problems. I do go through the batteries though, a new set about every 2 years. Now you can all have the last laugh. My wife took the truck to town the other day, and put in half a tank of fuel with no additive. Needless to say, I go to take it to town at -20, and it is plugged darn good. She is heading to town today for a new filter and I hope it gets warm enough for me to get it working. It was due for a new filter anyway. -Corn |
