I have been thinking about relocating to Wyoming and was curious to see what the job market was like in Wyoming.  I have been told the good jobs are in the oil fields.  Any truth in that?

there is plenty of jobs in the oil fields. you will start out as a "worm" which basically makes you the bitch. its hard work but i hear it pays very well. after a while you can move up in the ranks. im sure you can search the net to find jobs in wy. id look at the classified ads in the local paper of the town you wish to move too.

What part are you thinking about moving to?

Yea, work on the oilfields is rough.  Many days in a row but then a bunch off.  Pays very well.

Lots of jobs and not just oil fields. Many support and service jobs that are oil field related which do not require field work.

It is bringing the pay up for everything else as well. Fast food and walmart type jobs pay $9-10 which is much higher than most of the country.

What do you do now ?

Hey,  I'm considering a possible move out that way myself.  I'll be keeping my eye on this thread for any info.  I've been working at a propane distributor for 12 years and have experience in every aspect of the business.  I have a CDL class B with hazmat and tanker endorsements.  I'm also in the GA National Guard as a 13B cannon crewmember.  I can transfer to any state's NG without much problem,  so I'm going to be exploring Guard units out in Big Sky country as well.

My wife and I are just ready for a change of scenery.  We just had our 3rd child and don't want them raised up with the riff-raff that are amongst us where we currently reside.  Don't get me wrong,  GA has many nice areas(especially the N. GA mountains)  but we both just want to come out that way and give it a try out there.  I've driven through that area several times and even spent several weeks in MT fighting fires when I was in the regular Army back in the 90's.

If any of you can give me some leads or any information you think I should know;  please do.  I don't have to find something to get rich with.  I just want to be able to provide a nice environment to raise 3 young kids in.

I'm going to say right off the bat that I don't know anything about Propane distributing, but I would have to guess that you would have no problem finding a job driving out here. Outside of the big cities here in Wyoming, most folks living on Ranchettes (Small 5-40 acre homesteads) have to rely on their own tanks of natural gas/propane.

Most all of Wyoming right now will have plenty of jobs in any field you can think of.  The state's economy is based on energy, so even though the rest of the country is suffering, we're doing very well.

Yeah,  GA is going to quickly become hostile to our kind.  We've been able to stay free because Atlanta still wasn't as big as the rest of the state put together.  But now,  half of the 10 million people in the state live in the metro.  We're doomed.

It's funny... Whenever one of our people gets in trouble, they all say the same thing..."Screw this, I am going to work in the oil fields...", then the next morning they show back up for work.

The Railroad runs from coast to coast.  You have the Burlington Northern that runs through Casper, and the Union Pacific that runs across the whole state of Wyoming.  I work for the UP as a Labor Section Foreman (no I don't drive trains) and we are always looking for CDL drivers.  Pay varies by job ($20-$25/hr and all the over-time you want which can pay as much as triple time), vacation sucks when you start, but gets better up to 5 weeks a year, decent medical benefits, major depots are Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, and Green River, with promotion potential after your first 60 days.  If you get bored doing one job, bid to another and learn something new.

If you wanted to drive the trains though, they are making anywhere between $75,000-as much as $140,000 a year.  Good money, but never home, rotating shifts based on seniority, and never home, Oh, and did I mention that you will never be home?

Just thought I would throw that out there....

From what I understand, WHP are short staffed around Rock Springs.  But I think they send you where they want you at first anyways.

Howdy folks.

I "lived" up around Jackson for about 7 days.

My job @ the heart 6 ranch did not pan out.

Always thought about moving back out that way.I guess that part of the state is more expensive than the rest but it is also the pretiest.

Any way I am a Police officer here is Missouri....of course I would be open to getting a job that was not exactly law enforcement.

Maybe there are some employers who would be inclined to hire a police officer.Especially if I could get e reserve position somewhere and just do the cop thing part time.

Well I am enjoying this thread. How about some links to jobs that you can Apply on line.

Oh and my wife is a certified human resource manger.

I don't know of many departments that have reserve officers, Cheyenne did at one time, but I don't know about now.  Most departments are in need of officers and are constantly hiring.  Most also have a lateral program if you have years of experience in another department that can make things easier.

Almost every dept. has a web page, just google them.  I imagine like most it's going to come down to preference such as population size.  Cheyenne has 50K+ with a big department, swat, mounted patrol, motorcycle patrol etc.  Others, well "Dukes of Hazzard" comes to mind.

Good luck!

A lot going on in Sweetwater and sublette county. I believe that you can go 1 underto Wyoming Employment Services, a state sponsored job search service or just try Wyoming.gov. Haliburton, schlumberger, BJ sevices and weatherford are all oilfield service companies that are begging for CDL drivers. Many supply sales positions as well. As far as reassignment for LE all of the above seem to like the former training for safety positions which pay fairly well. Also, anyone with mining experience would do well. There are 4 underground trona mines one underground coal  mine and two strip coal  mines.  Don't forget pipelining, gas compresion, pumping, ranching, tourism, and all these people need their houses built and their cars fixed. But if you come, good manners willbe required.  Obey the Golden Rule. And don't litter my desert!!!!
