Police chief recovering after accidentally shooting himself
May 5th, 2008 @ 4:00pm

Gene Kennedy reporting

Riverdale's police chief will be out of the hospital tonight after accidentally shooting himself over the weekend. Riverdale Police Chief Dave Hansen will likely be on crutches for weeks.

On Saturday morning, the police chief was teaching a class on concealed weapons permits. His gun erroneously went off, and the bullet went through his ankle. He was using his Glock as a display. He was teaching gun safety to about a dozen citizens at the Riverdale Police Department.

He pulled the clip out of the gun, and then he was making sure the chamber was clear. Neil Hansen, the police chief's brother, said, "He pointed it down, pulled the trigger because he didn't want to give it to a classmate not knowing for sure whether a shell was in there. And at that point, the gun discharged and [the bullet] had gone through his ankle."

It's not the first time a gun training session has gone bad. On the popular site, YouTube, there is a video of a drug enforcement officer who accidentally shot himself in the leg while teaching a class. In the video, the officer is heard saying, "I'm the only one in this room professional enough, that I know of, to carry this Glock 40." The officer continued his presentation as if nothing happened.

That's not what happened for the Riverdale police chief. Neil Hansen said, "After it have gone off, he tried to stand up, and that's when he realized his ankle was so damaged."

he chief's brother, Utah Rep. Neil Hansen, said paramedics were next door. They rushed the chief to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden where he spent the weekend recovering. Neil Hansen said, "It looks like he may have to have a surgery or two. Right now, they have a rod on the outside of his ankle to kinda hold it together."

The police chief and his officers have been told to not make public comment because the incident is an open investigation. But the Steve Brooks, the Ogden City attorney told Eyewitness News there's been an obvious mistake in procedure. He said, "We're not admitting that Chief Hansen did everything correct here. Obviously, something wasn't done correctly, and unfortunately, he's the one who paid the price for it."

The investigation on this incident will last about two weeks. The city attorney said the chief won't be able to return to work for at least a month.

How is pointing the gun down and pulling the trigger to make sure that a live round wasn't in the chamber considered erroneously going off?

Not sure, but I'd like to know exactly when pulling a trigger is the correct method to make sure a gun isn't loaded/chamber is clear...  I'm glad I dont live up there.  I'm afraid of every single person that went through his class now...

If we want to keep our rights to own firearms, we cant be having "accidents" like this, ever.  It just fuels the argument that firearms are unsafe, even in qualified hands.

He may be the best guy in the world, but shit like that just doesn't happen if you follow the rules of gun safety, which he was supposed to be teaching at the exact time the "accident" happened.  No excuses.  There is no such thing as an accident when it comes to gun safety.  No exceptions.  He failed on all 4 rules from my point of view.

Rule 1.  He didn't treat his firearm as loaded, as if he did, he wouldn't have pulled the trigger with out checking.  When I took my CCW class with two officers, not only did they visibly check the chamber every time they picked up a weapon, they also verified with the other that it was safe.  No excuse not to check a chamber, ever.

Rule 2.  Well, maybe he didn't blow rule #2 assuming he was prepared to destroy his ankle...  Kinda doubt it, but you never know.

Rule 3.  He wasn't intending to shoot a target, therefore his finger should not have been on the trigger in the first place.

Rule 4.  Even if he was planning to dry fire, he obviously didn't have a safe target.

He should know better not only being a CCW class teacher, but also a police officer.  With an accident like that, can you honestly say that he is properly teaching the class about safety?  Do you really feel that if a new person went through one of his classes that they would handle a firearm safely?  (ie. new people following his example by firing into the floor to test if its empty.  If its good enough for him, it must be the thing to do.)

The end result.  He screwed up bad.  Not only did he put himself, but also everyone else in the room in danger.  Over-reacting you think?  What if it was someone else that got shot instead?  What if the round he shot off misfired the first time and the person he handed the gun to shot someone instead?  What if instead of a complete misfire, it was a delayed fire and it went off while exchanging the weapon?  The way I see it is he was being very careless and is lucky he was the only one hurt.

I do hope they revoke his training license at least.  Since he only hurt himself I'm sure nothing more will come of it, but I suspect that he will be left with a reminder every time he takes a step, at least for a few months.  Maybe that, along with his mistake being public, is good enough punishment.  If it happened to a civilian though, I doubt that person would ever be allowed to carry again.

That's what you get for breaking Col. Cooper's rules for weapons handling .

Yup.  I actually came here to post this and see if anyone here knew him.

UT: Police chief shoots self at gun training session
Fox News

"The police chief in Riverdale accidentally shot himself in an ankle
while demonstrating how to dislodge a jammed handgun. Chief Dave
Hansen was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden for surgery. The 54-
year-old chief accidentally fired a gun during a training exercise
inside a conference room at Riverdale police headquarters. A fire
captain and Riverdale Mayor Bruce Burrows confirmed the chief shot
himself Saturday in an ankle bone. They said he was trying to fix a
gun with a jammed round when the bullet fired. Riverdale police
officers carry .40-caliber pistols. Hospital supervisor Rohn Larsen
said Hansen was in stable condition Sunday. Larsen said he couldn't
reveal which ankle -- left or right -- the chief shot." (05/05/08)

Exactly right!

I am an NRA cerified pistol instructor and we all know, accidents do happen, however, anyone who is in the position of "teaching" others in the safe handling of a firearm should be more aware of the rules of safety more than anyone.  Usually when something like this happens its because they have become complacent with their surroundings and think nothing like this can happen to them ...

"Always treat every gun as if it were loaded"

I'm glad nobody else was hurt.  Cant blame anyone but the Chief.

Just imagine the embarrassment!  You know his brother was just trying to help cover for him, but I sure don't pull the trigger to see if there is still a round in the chamber.  Unfortunate.

He's lucky he only hurt himself, he must of had a major brain fart, it reflects badly on average gun owners. Unfortunate indeed.

The more I read this, the more I think the author of the article has the story wrong.

"He pointed it down, pulled the trigger because he didn't want to give it to a classmate not knowing for sure whether a shell was in there."

Bullshit.  No one is dumb enough to do exactly that for that exact reason.

The morning news is saying that an investigation is in progress (duh) and the findings should be out in the next day or so.  Guess we'll see how this all went down.

Its still carelessness no matter how you look at it.

RIVERDALE, Utah

The police chief who shot himself in the ankle was waving a loaded pistol and being careless, according to two students who were attending his class to qualify for a concealed-weapons permit. "We were told the gun is the chief's personal sidearm, but it looked to me like he didn't know anything about the gun," Lewis Walker said.

Bart Ulm, another student seeking certification to carry a concealed weapon, said he was surprised Chief Dave Hansen was using a loaded gun to show how it worked.

"Right then, I was very leery, because there's no need to have live ammo in a gun in the class. But I figured he's the chief, so he must know what he's doing," Ulm told the Standard-Examiner of Ogden.

Hansen held the Glock 40 under a table to disassemble it when a bullet fired, Walker said.

The chief cried, "I'm hit," and fell over. Students who were screaming "Officer down!" were urged to call 911.

The gun went off in a conference room Saturday at Riverdale police headquarters.

Hansen was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden for surgery and released Monday, Lt. James Ebert said.

Ebert said the findings of an internal investigation would be announced Wednesday. He declined to offer specifics but disputed the accounts of Ulm and Walker, describing the pair as "disgruntled."

Other students "did not share that feeling" about the chief, Ebert told The Associated Press.

Walker said he didn't have confidence in the investigation.

"I think Riverdale police are just trying to keep this quiet and act like the chief is a hero. But if you ask me, he's really stupid," Walker said. "His state certification to teach concealed-weapons classes should be taken away from him. This was totally gross negligence."

Ulm said there was a moment of levity during the emergency.

He said an officer at the scene joked that "instead of shooting himself, he should have used the Taser."

I don't care who you are, that's funny!

The police are the only ones pofeshnal 'nuff to use da Glock Fotay!

I REALLY hate it when gun owners embarrass us the way the Chief did.  The Sheeple look at this and think "My Gosh!  If the POLICE can't safely handle a firearm then those CCW nuts must be walking time-bombs! "  Those idiots who discharge their firearms while showing the TSA that they are unloaded at the airport chap my hide too.

Has that really happened?  I don't doubt there are people stupid enough to pack a loaded handgun into a piece of luggage.

Happens all the time people "forget" about their CFP and try to enter a secure area of the airport.

lol... oh jeez.
Yeah, if you were following any reasonable gun safety measures that would not have happened.  I would barely even point an airsoft gun at myself let alone a real gun... let alone a real gun with live ammo in the room... let alone pull the trigger of that gun.
I agree that I doubt he actually would have been stupid enough to pull the trigger to see if it's loaded, but still.  There's no reason stuff like this should happen.
