I know this is probably a stupid question, but I can't find the answer anywhere on the state wildlife website.  Do you need a permit to hunt squirrels here?  Are there any protected species, or are they unprotected like jacks and coyotes?

Thanks

I can't find the info now for the life of me, but I am 99.9% sure there are some protected ground squirrels in Utah. I will keep looking and see if I can find it. You might have to call the DWR and ask to make sure. If you do, get the person's name and date / time you talked to them, as I have heard stories about folks being told one thing by the office and something else in the field. Maybe ask to speak to the Law Enforcement division, as they should know for sure.

Editted, I have gone over each of the species listed on the DWR web site and came up with nothing. I am wondering if it has changed, as I checked into it a few years ago and found something about a squirrel in northwestern Utah being protected, maybe the Beldings Ground Squirrel??? Anyway, it obviously isn't anymore. Which is good, I know where a bunch of them are and just got 10000 rounds of .22lr ammo last month.

Come on spring!!!!!!

From both the furbearer and falconry guidebooks:

"(b) "Protected wildlife" does not include coyote, field mouse, gopher, ground
squirrel, jack rabbit, muskrat, and raccoon."

So for those cases there's no limit, but you probably do want to double check with someone at the DWR.
