I went into a local shop today and came out with Maadi AK. It is a single stack with thumbhole stock, but I hear I can change that with some patience and a dremel tool. Rifle with 4 10rnd mags, 1 40 rnd for testing/fitting, and all taxes/background for $240. So, I figure about $100-150 more for compliance parts, and/or folding stock or other set up for a decent AK with several "evil features" for a grant total of $400 or less. Any thoughts from anyone? Anyone ever done the mag well conversion and could give me some tips?

I'm not sure I read that right, is it a complete firearm now or did you buy a kit?  If you bought it complete, it should already have the necessary US made parts.  Check the AK forum for some info on widening the mag well.

I might be way off here, but I think I read somewhere that widening the mag well changes something requiring one additional US made part.  Hopefully someone will be along to set me straight if I'm misleading you.

Well, it's in a neutered state right now, so I don't think it needs US parts count. If I want to go to a full AK set-up, it needs parts. I'll have to take it apart to confirm, but I think I need at least 5 US parts, and since I want to thread the muzzle, I need a US made FS/MB to get to 6. I've been checking in the AK forums, and I'm pretty sure that's what I have to do to stay legal.

Widening the mag well necessitates the addition of ALL the compliance parts as there aren't any in the 10-round-only guns.

In my estimation, while this may make a good project, for the money you could have just driven out to Vector Arms in NSL.

Ian is the one to ask for technical questions about building firearms.

I guess I was kind of right about adding compliance parts.

Don't give me too much credit, I'm still learning (or trying to anyway).

Only problem with Vector is that they are on a 3 to 4 month backorder; that's what I heard last. I could be wrong, but I figured a project would be good for me. I've taken it apart a bit and am looking now at replacement parts for the gun. I'll see what I'll come up with.

You're right, they're pretty far behind.

It's funny, 6 months ago they couldn't give away their AKs.
