Hi guys, I was born in your state 25 years ago and will be attending a family reunion in August of next year around the crater lake area.  We plan to do some hiking, camping, and general sight-seeing.

I have been looking online and it looks like I need to be a resident of a neighboring state to carry down there.

Are there any ways around this?

Get a Utah License for CHL.

I just looked and Oregon doesn't recognize out of state permits from Utah.

Most of the things I read were from 2 years ago though, has it changed since then?

No way around it. You wont be able to CCW with out living in a neighboring state and then getting your Oregon CCW.

Open carry

ETA I was positive that I was right when I wrote this... Starting to second guess myself.

Here we go

From this link http://www.oregonfirearms.org/faq/

Does a valid Washington State concealed pistol permit allow concealed carry in Oregon? I have searched the internet but have had no luck finding the answer. If you know where I could find the information I would appreciate it.
No it does not.

Oregon allows you to apply for an Oregon license if you live in a bordering state and can show a "compelling business interest" or "other legitimate" reason. Some sheriffs consider "self defense" sufficient.

The sheriffs have discretion which they don't have if you live in Oregon. If you should choose to apply and meet the criteria, remember you can apply to the sheriff of any county. Some are a lot more friendly than others.

Buy my house, and move to Oregon.  Then get a CHL...oh, yeah, and there is that whole job thing, unless you are independently wealthy.  Or, move to Washington...

Would it be legal for you to visit here, find a friend where you can rent a bedroom for X dollars a month, to call yourself a resident?  Or does the law specify a percentage of time that you have to live here?  You would have to figure out how to do it legally, as I sure wouldn't want any grief from a sheriff over an illegal CHL.

I understand that the Grant County Sheriff's office is very helpful in CHL matters.  To be certain, I would never ask or recommend that anyone break the law.  Perhaps it would be worth a call to their office and ask for suggestions.  If there is a legal way to accomplish this, they might be able to tell you what it is.

There is an exception to the CHL requirement for people who are legally going hunting or fishing.  Perhaps if you bought an out of state fishing license, and kept your pole in the car with your tackle while you were on your way to the fishing location...

Your only choice is to open carry unless you spend the time and money to be a resident.

Like was stated earlier:

Unfortunately Oregon doesn't recognize out of state licenses like the Utah...

Dang it, I may have to sit this one out

dude just OC.  I think everyone down in that area has a gun or OC's anyway.  Don't be a puss.  Or just get some 5.11 pants, tuck in a collard shirt and make it look like your a detective or something.  Besides if its a family reunion down there you should have some relatives that carry.  Just roll with them.

oh, and sitting out your family reunion because you can CCW is lame.  Go, have fun, bring an auto folding knife.

You'd miss a family reunion just because you couldn't conceal carry yer gun?  That just seems silly to me.

SMP is right..there has to be someone in the family that you trust to cover your back..Besides, if you are at family functions on private property, you can carry anyhow.  Heck, I haven't felt the need to shoot anyone since...well, a long time...

You are far more likely to be injured in a traffic collision than by someone committing a crime against you.  Keep that seat belt tight...

I dont have any family in Oregon, they all live in california or Washington, which leaves out the private property thing.

I just looked into open carrying and it looks like the only places its banned are Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Oregon City, Salem, and Independence.

Independence, huh......kinda ironic.

No way around it really. Are you flying down or driving?

Does your family member in WA have any firearms?

If I where you I would at the very least have that family member in WA bring a sidearm or shotty to keep on hand.

Just how do you plan on getting your hand gun from AK to OR????

If you're driving it's not going to happen due to that little thing called Canada, they don't like handguns and they have been know to search cars from time to time.

If you are flying, you would have to put you gun (unloaded) in your checked luggage, declare it and hope TSA, or the baggage handlers don't steal it.   It should also be noted that you can not check ammo, so you would have to buy some in OR and then use it or throw it way before you leave.

Have fun.

That is not true for Alaska Airlines. I fly Alaska Air every summer to go to Ketchikan, and I've checked handguns, rifles and ammo without issue for the past few years. I'm taking my AR, a couple hundred rounds of .223 in addition to some stocking stuffers (.243 and 8mm Mauser) for my nephew, and the Alaska Air website says you can pack up to 50lbs of ammo in your luggage.

ETA: the TSA website also says you can put ammo in checked baggage (some requirements on packaging), but individual airlines may have more strict requirements or not allow ammo to be checked. It just depends on what airline you use.

Yep +1 to this....I flew Alaska in Sept to Cali and had both my handgun and ammo checked in my baggage.  The ammo had to be in an approved container, I just used the factory ammo box for my personal defense ammo I brought.  I put the box of ammo in my glock case, with my handgun, threw a cable lock around the box handles and it was good to go!

Whenever I go on vacation I fly with an AR and a couple handguns, still havent gotten anything stolen.  I use a large pelican case.

I'll probably just end up open carrying everywhere when I'm outdoors and hopefully give some retards a heart attack
