| I'm hoping someone would be willing to share a location that I can do some longer range shooting 500yds+. Feel free to im me if you don't want everybody showing up there, I was out today and the longest shot I could take was 300yds and I really want to step it out a bit and start working on my wind reading skills. Thanks |

I'm out near Forest Grove and I only know of Brown's Camp (200yds). Surely there must be better/longer places around here. Maybe some hilltop-to-hilltop on some clearcut forest land? If anybody knows a good spot, DO TELL!!!
I was out shooting last summer just south of Bend and there's lots of places to stretch out there. cheers, Benji |
| I found a place where you could probably shoot 400-500yds, but its sketchy because you would have to shoot across the spur rd you drive up. Which is why I never have shot there. There are a few good places out on the N side of hwy 6 that you can shoot landing to landing or across canyons, but you just have to look for them. They just did a crap load of clear cutting in one area that I frequent out in the Tillamook State Forest. Haven't really looked for a nice level 300+ yd shot, but I will check it out next time i am out there. I have heard of places where you can shout from ridge to ridge and its about 900yds, but I haven't explored those areas. Having a map of the forest rds really helps so you can make sure you are shooting safely. I was just told about a place where you can shoot to 480yds, so I am going to go find it one of these days. |

I havent ranged it, but going off google maps I would say 600+ yds....more depending how far back to the treeline u go....I would guess the treeline to the pits farthest south wall would be almost 800yds. Again this is sort of sketchy and I would probably only try it on a week day when not many folks are out there....also u would be shooting over a road, so there may be some hunting type laws u may wanna look at |

Tri-county gun club has 600 yard practice on tuesday evenings starting at 5:30pm. The group gets split in half, with half going to shoot, the other half to pull targets, then they switch. Look at Tri-Counties web page for the schedule of events, and contact Pete to get on to shoot. He can give you all the details. Although you have to either be a member, or guest of a member, the group that shoots there is quite friendly, and I'm pretty sure Pete will help you figure out how to get shooting. Pete is a great guy to work with, so don't be shy about contacting him.

DRRC has long range day every Thursday. Half the day is 300-600 yards, the other half is 600-1000 yards.

nice. I know you can't hunt from or across a road, but what about target shooting? That's not hunting. Of course it's gotta be safe... Ya I can't remember off the top of my head if its legal to shoot across a road, even if not hunting....I can't find my ORS pocket guide, so I'll have to look into it when I get to work tonight. |
| when it comes to shooting across roads i prefer not too ,thats one reason I haven't found anyplace. Really anything too sketchy i'd not try, just for safety sake. I thought about both Douglas and tri county but don't know any members. Thanks for the place on cochran I looked it up on google maps, a bit of a drive but it looks promising. |

I plugged the Cochran Rd range into "mapmyride.com" and it came out roughly 756yds. You can take the terrain map and drag points to make an "as the crow flies" route and it'll tell you how many miles it is. I got .43 miles, which roughly works out to 750yds. When you're shooting hilltop-to-hiltop there, how much elevation do you have above Cochran road?
Anybody know of somewhere nearer to Brown's Camp to shoot longer than the 200yds in the pit? |

(1) Except as provided in ORS 166.220, any person is guilty of a violation who discharges or attempts to discharge any blowgun, bow and arrow, crossbow, air rifle or firearm: (a) Upon or across any highway, railroad right of way or other public road in this state, or upon or across the ocean shore within the state recreation area as defined in ORS 390.605. |
| If you're shooting from up on Wheeler Pond rd down into the pit off Standard Grade Rd. it doesn't look like you are shooting across an ACTUAL public road, eh? I can't tell from the map; is that a working RR right of way that runs between the pond and the pit? Cause that's covered as a no-no also... |

Ya that railroad is still active, as far I know (it was a couple of years ago at least). If you are shooting from up on the clear cut to the north of Wheeler Pond Rd is pretty level with the Cochran quarry....it is also quite a bit higher than the road....so its not like u are actually shooting across the road, but maybe 35-50 feet above it...the same goes for the railraod, maybe 50-75 feet higher. |

So the ORS is very specific and clear: no shooting ACROSS a road/HWY/RR right of way. Shooting "above" is clearly not included in the restrictions. Across would reasonably be "across the tracks, from the ground up to the same height as the highest vehicle/train which travels on the road/rails. If you're over that, you're not really crossing anything, eh? The RR doesn't own the airspace, so that's not a right-of-way up there... As long as nobody's in the pit so it's unsafe, seems legal. I'm no lawyer or game officer though... Hey B, does that sound reasonable to you? cheers, Benji |

If anyone else is considering sharing your secret shooting spot with him, or inviting feelinlucky out to shoot, I highly recommend him. He is a gentleman, willing to follow the clubs rules without complaint, shows excellent safety and gun handling, and a good shot to boot. Overall, just a fine fellow to shoot with. I was pleased to find out that he is NOT one of those guys full of bluster, bragging, and BS.
By the way, at last night's 600 yard league, we initially thought I came out one point ahead of him. After reviewing the scores and targets, it appears we had a dead even tie on score at 189 points. I ended up with 2X, and he may have nicked me by having 3X which would mean he broke the tie with a higher X count. |

When my feet would cooperate, I had some great spots to hike into around the Deschutes river. You could shoot almost unlimited distances. Had to carry everything in, but I don't know if you can even shoot there any more. I think the river rafting people might have complained about the shooting they heard, and as a result, BLM may have put a hold on shooting near the river. But it has been so long since I have been there, I don't have any current info on what the status of shooting around the Deschutes river is.
Does anyone know? |
