Any bird hunters ever hunt the EE Wilson unit  for pheasant?

I used to hunt there back in the early 90's.  It was decent hunting.  Best if done with a dog.

When I had a dog I would almost always get 2 in the morning.

Go to any of the areas open to hunting.. Look for and follow the tire tracks in the vegetation.
Look for cover near the tracks.  That's where your pen raised birds will be hiding.

I always liked the NW quarter of the area.  I would walk  around the blackberries in an area that, as I recall, was like a bunch of small city blocks.  There were a couple of old building foundations but mostly just brush and the dirt roads.

It has been over 10 years since I hunted there so things may be way different.  They had just finished adding a couple of ponds.  I would usually park at a check station due south of the ponds and walk north on the paved road (as I remember there were 2 paved roads running north and south, they are paralel, I would walk up the one on the west side).

I used to hunt the juvenile hunt every year.  Hunted both the north and south sides, preferred the south.  There was more thick cover on the south end (blackberries and scotch broom) but toward the east side it opened up to pastures and such.  The whole area is an old military base criss-crossed with old paved roads and building foundations.  On a sunny afternoon the pen raised birds will come out and sun themselves on the roads.  I have a neighbor who would take his bicycle out there and just ride the roads till he saw one.  Had very good luck with no dog.

Was out there yesterday morning with my friend and our two German Shorthairs. I shot one, he got two... a dang near perfect autumn morning!
