I've got a RRA CAR A4 and would like to put a scope on it and take it deer hunting this year.  .223 is a small caliber for deer hunting but I've taken a few deer with a mini14 so with the accuracy of an AR it shouldn't be a problem with a well placed shot.

Back to the subject I'm not sure what to put on it.  I'd like something in 3x9x40 and don't want to pay big bucks.  Through the gun club I belong to I can get good discounts on most brands.

So if anyone has any suggestions I'd liker to here what you've done or what you've seen.

I have a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9X40 with BDC reticle and Warne ultra high tactical rings on my 16" AR and I am very happy with this set up.  The scope is crystal clear and very bright, the cross hairs are fine and the BDC marks are quite accurate if you shoot at long range.  I think you can pick one up at BiMart for around $220 or so.  Not the cheapest nor the most expensive, but probably a "best value".   IMHO

Thanks for the info.  I've got the BDC on a couple rifles and I'm just not sure I like it yet.  The circle reticle is just new to me.

I have been checking out the Warne ring too.  Do you have the AR Flattop ring in quick detach?

Can you post up a pic  of you rifle?

You can step up to the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14x40 SF.  Excellent scope for the money.  I have one and it's a great match for an AR.
Sometimes they show up on the Sample List.

The aforementioned Team Primos scope is on The Sample List at a discount over retail.

No, they are not the style with the throw levers, they have a serrated hex nut that you can torque with a small torque wrench to get very consistent return to zero when re-mounting them.  They are the "Maxima, tactical series" part number A604M.

I don't have a pic.  But I am afraid to take one and post it because it might expose my laziness for all of the HTF to see!!

(I actually have the 30mm rings with A.R.M.S. 1" adapter bushings holding the scope right now - which looks a little bulky.  I have the more svelte 1" versions brand new in the package, but I haven't gotten around to swapping them for... well... over a year now!)

Edit:

If you buy Warne rings you can still keep WS4LIF happy (even if you don't drink the Leupold kool-aid) because Warne rings are made right here in Oregon too!

I've got a buckmaster 6-18x40.  It's great glass for the money, but I'm definitely still getting used to the BDC reticle.  It was on a VTR in .308, but now it's going on an SPS-V that Imma have cut down to 20" and threaded...
Once I get my load dialed in, then I guess I'll spend some time wringing out the holdoffs, eh.

cheers, Benji

I have heard a lot of good comments on the Leupold Mark AR scopes.  I'm thinking about getting the 3x9x40.  I would really like the Mark 4 MR/T but to much money.

I have one of these puppies on my AR,  and I like it.  Not to say that I don't want something better (I really want a Mark 4 on it some day, but it's a bit out of my current budget),  but it does the job for what it is, and does it fairly well.  It also helps that I only shoot 55gr loads anyways,  since that is the weight it is matched for with this scope.

NC Star is the way to go. Just wait till the gunshow rolls back through town. You could get a 6x24x50 with rings for $100.

Cheap cheap chinese shit.  No thank you.

As a machinist,  I try to keep my purchases local,  especially when they are machined parts,  but if in my own neighbourhood isn't obtainable,  I will at least make an effort to make it an American made part.

Long story short... My ARs are 100% American made parts,  including my optics/sights.

Forever is lo,longerer than lifetime, unless you're Jesus. Whats the maximun responsible range for hunting deer with a .223? 100m maybe 150m, PNWSmoker you might be best served with a fixed 4 or 6 power. Hell maybe even one of those low power variables made for revolvers. If they can handle the recoil of a .357, or .44M, it should handle a .223 fine.

Names that come to mind.
Nikon
Bushnell
Burris
Leopuld
Tasco

Throw down a couple hundred bucks, get something that works best for you and good luck.

I already have a 3x9x40 Leupold mounted up.  Got the warne rings last night.  On range for deer hunting... everyone will have their own opinion but I've killed deer with .223 at 200 yards mutiple times.  It's all about a well placed shot.  I've also killed deer with a 44mag pistol at 100 yards with a fixed power scope again it's about a well placed shot.

Anyway below are a couple shots of the rifle.  I need a A2 buttstock for it.  I really like the Warne rings too.
