I've had my dog for about a year now, and I guess when we got her spayed they notified the county (multnomah), and now I'm getting notices to pay $30 per year which I'm not too happy about.  I noticed on the card there are boxes to check if the pet is deceased, no longer owned, etc.  Anyone know what the fine is for "Keeping an unlicensed animal" and how thorough they are in verifying ownership?  I don't want to pay the gov't to own a dog.

I recently got that same bill/notice about our cats... vet must have notified them when  they were spayed but the bill was for two unaltered cats... paid online and checked that they were spayed and it went from $30 to $8 per cat... dunno what the price break for dogs is... check the county's website thats on the letter you got.

No idea what the fine is for not paying/registering or how much they keep up on it (clearly your vet sent them your dogs record once already, and they need rabies vacc. once a year, and the county keeps track of this, so....)

I agree with you in principle in your not wanting to pay - the concept of paying the government a licensing fee (tax) to own a pet does burn my ass.

I have to pay my HOA for our dogs, but I don't recall ever having to pay the county... Maybe it's included in our HOA dues...

I'm in Multnomah county as well.

Jackson County does the tags down here, I would think most counties do.

DOG LICENSES REQUIRED.

(a) A keeper must have his/her dog licensed pursuant to the terms set forth in this chapter. The license must be obtained within 30 days of the dog obtaining the age of six months or within 30 days of acquisition by the keeper, whichever occurs later. An individual dog license is not required for any dog kept in a kennel described in JCC 844.01(a)(4) which has a permit under JCC Chapter 844.

(b) Violation of this section shall be subject to penalties provided under JCC 202.99 but under no circumstances will the fine be less than the penalty fee established from time to time by the Board of Commissioners.

There is a $50.00 contact penalty which applies if you are contacted by an officer, receive a citation, or if your un-licensed dog is impounded.

Polk County license fee is $15 for the year OR $35 for 3 years on a fixed dog.....if you are cited for a non license dog it is a  $242 citation iirc...if your dog is impounded by the Deputy add Humane Society fees and as a condition of release you have to have the dog chipped figure $100....

Pay the F***ing tax so those of us who don't own pets or who follow the laws and pay the tax don't have to subsidize your dog.

If you don't want to pay get rid of your dog or contact your legislator.

how are we subsidizing his dog if he simply does not pay the man to keep a pet. i say ignore the notice or check deceased if they ever come around to cite you say its a new dog or your watching if for your friend whos outa town for a few days. i wouldnt know what the local regs are on dogs because i had a boating accident and all my dogs fell overboard i fail to see how my dog would ever cost the taxpayers a single cent. just be a responsible person in every aspect of your life

I was just looking for info.  First time for me, so I had to find it if it was one of those "you poor sucker, no one pays that" kind of things.   I did find out it's only $16 per year for being spayed/shots, so no big deal.

About the subsidizing thing, WTF??  If that's your attitude then wouldn't you prefer that I don't pay, and get fined?  Then the county gets more money and can then "subsidize" more dog owners.  As far as I can tell from the county website, the fees go to services that are only really necessary due to other peoples negligent behavior.   I can't wait to pay for that.

I aggree, I don't see the need to pay the county for the privilege of owning a dog. I keep mine up to date on all needed shots and they don't roam free, so they don't cost the county or anyone else a dime.

Check deceased.

Are you serious?

I wonder what else you're ok with .gov controlling/taxing.

If my welfare living neighbor can have 14 outdoor cats roaming around crapping in my yard and tormenting my dog then I can have my unregistered gun i mean dog...

To all you anti-gov types on this post, I hope you are standing by your principles when April 15th comes this year.  I'd be more upset with the welfare you are paying for the neighbor than subsidizing here animals.

Oh, that's right, you can not pay the dog license and likely get away with it.  Bravery comes in degrees as does principles I suppose.  LOL

Oh man, dont get me started on her. She is seemingly proud to anounce that she only pays $25 of her 700 dollar rent. I get to pay the rest for her.
