Hello I'm looking into the possability of moving into the portland area. And I'm wondering what the job market is like. I'm 21 and some what a jack of all trades. Also what are the gun laws like up there? Open carry? ar15s? Also what is the cost of living like up there? Meaning how much at a full time job would I need to make to live? |

Downtown Portland would be expensive in terms of cost of living. I'm not sure what to tell you about the job market since you didn't really specify what you'd be doing. Currently the gun laws are good here, but that may change now that the Dems are in power n the local government and one local senator is in the pocket of Sarah Brady and is sure to put forth legislation that would make California look like not a bad place in terms of gun laws. Edited to add -- some places local carry is illegal, but I'd never try it. For concealed carry, at least in my county, I had to take a class and then pay $65 for the license. There was no live-fire test and there is no limit on the handgun you can conceal. Of course, it's handgun only, so you can't run around with a short barreled shotgun under your trench coat. NFA stuff is legal in this state, so if you can afford it, you can buy a machine gun or suppressor or have a short barreled rifle. It is also a shall issue state for concealed carry. Oregon is interesting in that the big cities are very blue while the rest of the state is red. You might try looking here for ideas about housing costs and the job market. |

A great resource for gun laws/ information is Oregon Firearms Federation. They are a local lobbyist working hard to keep our 2nd amendment rights in Oregon. As far as jobs, I wish we had more business and I would offer you one at our company. I think you can find work, but education/ credentials will dictate how well you live. Here are some prices on common goods(no sales tax here): Gas: $2.50 regular Single Apartment: $500 on up Fast food: $5 Cell phone: $45/ month Movie: $8 Cable TV: $45 223 Ammo: $4-5 per 20 on sale Places to go to save cash: Bi-Mart, WinCo, Costal Farm Stores, Gun Shows(Rose City). Hope this helps, portland cragslist could be a great resource as well. |
Clarification: Open carry is legal everywhere (to the best of my knowledge) except Beaverton and Portland. Carrying in those two places, or anywhere concealed, requires a CHL. Correction: Technically, there is no part of any law that states that it must be a handgun, or it must be concealed. If I want to walk around downtown Portland with a short-barreled M16 slung over my shoulder, I'm within my rights to do so (since I have a CHL). I'm sure it would cause a conniption fit of biblical proportions on the part of the authorities, but there is nothing saying it's illegal. For jobs, check Portland Job Finder |
| Houses are still cheap (relatively). Protland prices are going up and have been for a while now, but Portland is the "least expensive big city on the west coast." If you can find a job outside of Portland all the better. Get down I-5 south of Woodburn and housing is much less expensive; Salem and Albany are still affordable, further south into Eugene and prices seem to come back up a bit. |
I'm one of those she has helped!
