Patty,
It's a German phrase of affection.  Babelfish translates it as "sweetheart".

Normally a word used to show affection to ones children or girlfriend/wife.

Means "loves" like a noun.  Like "These are my loves", "You are my love".

My mom calls me and my brother her "leibshen".

Germans compfterable with someone of the opposite sex might use this...

Old German women would call me that sometimes when I was a kid.

That's really cool WS4.  I'm not sure I appreciate my client calling me that but I'll take it as a compliment and move on.

It's pronouned "LEE-B SHEN"

If it was an older guy it's no big deal...some one of the same age...not offensive but like someone calling you "honey", like "Thanks honey".

-schen is a suffix that means small...  Like we use for -let (booklet, piglet) in English.

Liebe means love.  But you can also begin letters with Liebe as in "Dear,"

Liebschen translates (and is used) as sweetheart, but a literal/word for word translation is little love/ little dear.   I don't think anyone would ever call their Grandfather Liebschen.

Depending on where the person is from, they could use it like a waitress calling you "hon'"

Don't worry Patty, I wouldn't take offense if I were you.
