So as not to continue to hijack the Wyden topic:

I asked a friend in Hong Kong to find out the price in China.
It is RMB 4 (4 Yuan) per litre -- which is about 48c/l
which is ~ $1.82/USgal.

A huge chunk out of the weekly budget of a typical Chinese citizen.

That's most likely the entire budget of the average Chineese worker. China's energy demands for industry are increasing at a huge rate though, thanks to our Government allowing imports from communist human rights violators. Was that sentence redundant? Anyway, they need an energy source to make goods for us. Gasoline is a by-product of the making of "fuel oils", i.e. you get x ammount of fuel oi, y ammount of gasoline, z ammnt of mtor oil, n ammnt of other stuff rom a barrel of crude.

Right ... so there should be a glut of gasoline on the market, since they produce this as a by-product, and can't sell it internally.

I still think the "excuse" for the high gas prices is just that.

Of course, this doesn't invalidate your concern that we should be looking at other energy sources - and not just for cars/trucks, but for everything we do.

I'm not sure the general populace could be trusted with a fusion reactor. I'm not all that sure I could be trusted with a fusion reactor

Mr. Fusion wouldn't help us drive our cars, Mr. Fusion would only power the flux capacitor.
