Odd question, but I'm frustrated and not that creative.  I want a sturdy flag pole bracket located on the decorative columns on my front porch.  The columns are what I believe to be 4x4 wood posts surrounded by 1/2" thick decorative vinyl boards.

Initially I screwed the bracket into the vinyl. The screws would eventually work their way out and/or stress the thin vinyl by bending.  There is not enough clearence to run expanding wing nuts between board and 4x4, plus I don't trust the vinyl board strength. So I drilled bigger holes and ran 1/4" lag bolts with vinyl spacers directly into the 4x4. Well, this week a bad storm destroyed my plastic bracket - but at least my bolts didn't fail!

I know aluminum or steel mounts are available, but the screw holes are sissy sized and there isn't enough clearance to drill out larger 1/4" holes on the metal brackets I've seen.

Any ideas?  Some pics.  'MERICA!

Old flag pic, have bigger and better (but heavier) flag now.

Get a bracket like this and longer screws even if smaller in diameter.  Insert wood dowel into existing holes and break off.  It will help new screws grab the larger hole.

To the original poster, have you asked your HOA for permission to install the flag :)
