Proof that they will claim anything without any actual knowledge of scripture... Luke 2:1 states that they left their home in Nazareth to go to Bethlehem to be counted in a census that required they be in their home cities (there are questions about this since no record can be found of a Roman census at that time). Luke mentions in verse two that this was the "first." He is well aware of the second (he wrote Acts 5:37, too). There is some evidence that may point to an earlier census. There are arguments in favor of it and against it. A lack of secular records outside of Luke is not conclusive, however, any more than a lack of secular records regarding other things that have since been discovered should have been conclusive (even though critics argued such). It may be that more solid evidence of this "first" census is yet to be discovered. Here is some interesting reading of the arguments for and against, divided up into various lines, without too much bias one way or another like most internet pages devoted to this issue. http://www.biblearchaeology.org/post/2009/11/01/Once-More-Quiriniuss-Census.aspx#Article |
