How's everybody's season going? What iron are you hunting with?

So far not great.  Stuck a big doe 2 weeks ago arrow hit a limb between me and her and deflected the arrow, hitting her high in the shoulder and lost her.  No blood trail anywhere 4 or 5 drops where she broke my arrow off.  Searched for hours and nothing.  Kinda lost my hunting drive after injuring one and no recovery.  I know it happens but still sucks.   Went out Sat morning with the 44 carbine but didn't see anything.

0 for 3

Went out Saturday morning & afternoon and again Sunday morning hunting a creek bottom between areas of pine rows with only squirrels, crows and other birds for critters in my area.

Took my Marlin .44  with Leupold Scout Scope setup shooting Hornady's 225gr Leverlution  rounds. They travel about 1810~1835fps and very flat trajectory. I've taken 3 deer with that round, pretty effective.

7mm  or should I change to .44mag?

So far just a small buck and turkeys. No shots fired yet.

Hunting with a .308 AR, Nightforce, and SiCo Omega.
Will be hunting with a Tikka T3 .243 threaded for my Omega as soon as my barrel comes back.

It also helps if you have a rifle with you!

Draconis and I were trying to start the Cat 955 out on the Angry Emu Range, opening morning, when I spotted one, half way up the slope behind and to the left of the 200 yard backstop. It messed around out there in the middle of the power line cut for several minutes, paying us no mind. It was 350 yards from us, but, had we been sitting at one of his rifle benches, out there on the range, it would have been an easy 250 yard shot, right off the bench. The projected bridge across the creek will make it easier to drag out too.

We need to bring a rifle to the range next time Draconis, and then we could have venison for the next shoot!!! LOL

Saturday was so windy I didn't stay out long, never saw any deer either. Went out Sunday and watched 3 small does playing around in the field, couldn't spot the bigger does that I usually see them with. Hung a new trail camera that will text or email me pictures as soon as I get the SIM card activated. Had my trusty old Ruger M77 30-06 with me.

I won't get to hunt for shit this season. I have a 8 month old, and my wife works nights. I might get to go 2 or 3 times. I know I'm going thanksgiving weekend for sure.

I'll be using my savage 10TR with a 4x12 prostaff and a Saker 7.62.

Pitiful is all I can say.

Under typical conditions I rarely go in the woods w/o seeing multiple deer

A farmer about a mile up the road supposedly killed almost 150 deer over the summer with a crop deprivation permit.

I know it sounds outlandish but I'm not even getting pix of deer around the feeders at night.

This is where the picture of that really nice buck would be.
But alas, the deer of North Ga have been training hard in improvised body armor and use of cover

Got a decent 7 pointer in Lamar County Saturday at 18:50 running a doe. Remington 7400 in 30-06 did the deed.   It will be a couple weeks before I get back in the woods, but I know there are some monsters running around.

Passed up 8 bucks this last weekend, none were over 3 yrs old. My buddy saw 4. It was hot and I got tore up by chiggers by being too lazy to put up the tent and sleeping in the back of the truck.

I am waiting on a huge mature 8 that has been seen on cam regularly, as well as a few other "shooters" I know are around. I got a great trail cam pic of a bobcat I will post later.

Also now have a problem with some neighbors who are constantly riding dirt bikes. Idiots. If I catch them on my lease again, they are going to jail.

This morning a decent 8 point, probably 2-1/2 yr. old, came through my back yard exhibiting signs of pre-rut, this was in SW Douglas county. His neck was swollen and he was tailing some does, just not dogging them yet. Should get good in the next week or so.

Saw a 6,8, and a 10 probably would go 200#  and let them all walk. 6 and 8 were young and
Small, would have shot the 10 but put a9 point in the freezer last Friday. Just looking for big does for meat from here on  . Harris County Ga.

AAR for the Berry college quota hunt. Three days in the woods and didn't see a single deer. Didn't get shot though so I'm counting it as a win.

Very nice.

I got one on my cam that's about that size but he is nocturnal as all hell.  I have seen him a coup times when leaving for work. I think he just wants to taunt me.

Been hunting the rut hard. Had one shooter so far but could not get on him. I did manage to fill the cooler with nutritious free-range pork and venison:
Sat in a stand by my feeder, and about dark here come the pigs:

90 seconds later, a nice small sow hits the ground:

Chupacabra (err, thats me and my Saker'd blackout w/FLIR):

Loaded for the ride to camp:

Nice eating-size doe came out next evening but no buck trailing her. She stomped her feet at me long enough to piss me off:

Going back down Friday evening, as the rut is still on and they are chasing hard.

ETA: note to self: set the date & time on the dang feeder trail cam right this time. This little Scoutguard cam has sat by this feeder 365/24 in all conditions for 4 years now, and done yeoman's duty. Moltries and Cuddys have tried and died.

If anyone was interested... or else I wanted to brag on my blackout which is piling up the pigs. Rifle build:
Lower half: Colt lower (SBR stamp) and parts with Geissele SSA-E trigger and Magpul MOE SL stock, Noveske QD end plate. Nothing fancy.
Upper: Colt M4 upper-rcvr w/ USGI teardrop FA, Geissele MK4 9.5" rail in sand, Noveske 10.2" 300 AAC BO barrel, Silencerco Saker FH and Saker 7.62 suppressor. High end all the way.
Optics: FLIR RS64-35mm thermal scope, ATPIAL-C laser. I use a UNV mini DVR in pouch velcro'd to side of rifle with remote switch also velcro'd for vids. Here is where the most money was spent. Upgrading the thermal soon...
Ammo, misc: handloads with Barnes 110 TAC-TX (super) and 220 Sierra MK (subs), BFG sling with good-quality QDs.

So where's the videos?

Also what powder and charge are you using?
11/20/2015 1:00:32 AM EDT
[#32]
I don't publish my videos nor my loads. Work up yer own.

Plenty of porcine snuff movies on the web. Mine are for me to analyze after the shot - if I remember to turn the durn thing on. When I get something spectacular I'll post it up...

ETA to say I use Hogdon H110 for supers (Barnes 110 TAC-TX, Hdy 125 SST, Sierra 125 OTM) and VihtaVouri N110 for subs (220 Sierra MK). Nothing else. YMMV, and will certainly vary unless you have the same barrel, so numbers are useless, and for subs even laughable. Nothing burns cleaner than N110 in heavy subs IME, but you cannot get enough in a 300 BO case to match H110 velocities for supers because it is a bulky stick powder. You can get enough H110 in a case to stress it a lot. I have a lot of Barnes Vortex 110 grain TAC-TX factory loads I bought to test/chrono and they are not as hot nor as accurate as mine. My 220 subs run about 1025 fps in cold weather. CCI 41 primers.
