I'm stumped here. Need to find some place to go, within driving distance, not ridiculously expensive, and fun for kids (6&3).
Would like to go to the beach but open to any ideas. Just tired of going to PCB. 8 hours is about the further we want to drive. Hotel must have pool. Any hidden gems we have been missing out on? |

We are heading down to the Peace River in Arcadia tomorrow and renting a few kayaks for a 3 day trip on the river. There's good fishing and fossil hunting, though you are supposed to have a permit for fossil collection you get from UF, it's only $5. There a a bunch of options for how long of a trip you want to take.

I would say the Outer Banks in NC. Its a barrier island. They can go to the Wright Brothers museum, and you can take them to Hatteras Lighthouse. I used to live right behind the memorial. We go there in June, my brother still lives there and it's out birthdays. But you are right, excellent suggestion! |

The Amelia Hotel at the Beach is a nice hotel in Fernandina Beach, FL. The hotel sits across the street from the beach. There is an excellent restaraunt which is on the beach essentially. Caddy corner from the hotel is a business that rents beach toys. Basically, you can park the car and everything you need is right there. Great hotel for the money as well. |

Yeah, I'd hold off on PCB for right now. As I understand it, things are pretty bad down there. Crime wise? More details please They had two stabbings and a shooting Saturday night on the beach. During the first part of Spring Break all of the criminals and low lifes come in to prey on the college and HS kids |

St george island all the way That looks interesting. Got any more details? What area is good to stay in? It's awesome, you can stay at the buccaneer on the island but I usually save the money and stay in Apalachicola at the best western. It has a pool and is pretty nice. There is a fishing area at end of the island that is nice and secluded, it's like $5 a day for the pass but they only 10 vehicles per day. It has great shelling and fishing, but for swimming I'd stay in the regular part of the park. The boss oyster in Apalachicola is good eating as the restaurant right up from it. It's worth the 30min drive one day as well to go to the Indian pass raw bar. It's a local place that only serves oysters and shrimp but it's awesome. St George island also has a pretty good pizza place on the island when someone tires of seafood . |

Jekyll Island
Amelia Islamd Tybee Island Cumberlamd Island (beach and camping) Savannah (beach at Tybee 15 min away, history, tours) Tallula Gorge (camping, hiking) Pigeon Forge, Tn (mountains) I can think of more. We are rich in places to vacation within a few hours of here. |

My family's go-to vacation spot is St Augustine Fl and the surrounding area. Great beaches and plenty of sights to see that the kiddies will enjoy, like the St Augustine Alligator Farm and the St Augustine Wild Reserve.
The wild reserve is a rescue-type set up for big cats and such. They have multiples of all the color phases of the tiger, leopards, panthers, cougars, African lions, wolves and more. You get really close to them.......through cages, naturally. The trolley ghost tour is neat, as is the lighthouse tour and boat tour on a 3-masted schooner. Castillo de San Marco is a must see, as is Ft Matanzas. There is also a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum. Great restaurants and shops. Plenty for kids and adults. I'm in Dallas, north of Atlanta a ways. It's a 6 hour drive for us. |

Good pool and kids play area would be an added bonus. |

I can't recommend a hotel in St Augustine, we always rented a condo.
I seem to remember a Comfort Inn that wasn't far from downtown that looked clean. There is a Marriott property near Flagler College that is right in the downtown area......my in-laws stayed there before and liked it very much. |

Its sand, its weathered, the only place on the island with shells fragments is around the oyster bars at the boy scout camp. |

Turks and caicos, the sand is softer than baby powder....
Been to beaches all over the world and nothing has come close to it. So far st Augustine is in the lead. The gator farm and lions have won the boys over, I just wish I could find a decent place to stay... |

+1 for St Augustine!
I haven't been there in years, but my wife has always made a point of going there for a couple of days, with the kids, when she visits her father in The Villages, in FL. I'm not sure where all she has stayed. Probably where ever she got the best deal on priceline.... |
