I don't have a problem preparing a GA HTF Dove Field in Dublin for the 2015 season but it's expensive to plant and maintain a QUALITY field.
The cost to plant and maintain a 10 acre of sunflowers bordered by brown top millet and/or Egyptian wheat is somewhere in the $3000.00 range. That price includes the land, seeds, herbicide, fertilizer ETC. There's no guarantee it will produce flowers if it's an extremely dry and there's also no guarantee there will be birds no matter how well the flowers produce. You could prepare a trashy field full of weeds and stunted sunflowers for far less but that's not my style. A nice 10 acre field could host 8-15 shooters depending on the layout and flight pattern. td |

If we could work it out I'm in. I'm typically paying $75-$100 for one day shoot now. A friend charges $150 for opening weekend including BBQ. I've paid that and only killed half dozen in a weekend, so I totally understand where you are coming from. IMO the season starts too early, before the migratory birds show up in good numbers, and you are mostly killing local immature birds on opening day. I've always had more success on later hunts, except for a few years when God smiled and we had a barrel burner opening day.
I know a couple guys who live near Ft Valley that are bird fanatics, and they call me when they find a field, they cruise around and know a lot of folks and farms. Even with them checking fields daily, shoots can still be hit-or-miss. Getting the timing right on cutting, burning, and having birds show up is an art, and still involves lots of luck. It takes about $200.00 a head to recoup your investment. Opening weekend is already at full capacity with friends and family shooting for free. How's that for a business plan..?? I'll see if I can put something together later in the season if the birds stick around. td |
