My wife wants to move closer to her mother. Looking at relocating somewhere close to McDonough. But I have a few questions and concerns on my part about weapon laws, regulation and policies in GA.
To be more specific here is a list of questions I have at this time: 1.I see GA requires a Concealed Carry permit. I sure it close to the same up here: No carry in bars, federal building & school grounds, if in contact with LE let them know your status. But anything else I should know? 2.I would Like to own property that I can shoot on, is this a realistic option somewhat close to McDonough? What parts of what city should I be looking at? (I don’t mind commuting anywhere up to 2-hours or so) 3.Is suppressed weapons legal to hunt with down there? 4.Any restrictions on Steel core penetrator ammo? 5.Any restrictions with Magazine limits? 6.Any regulations on personal body armor? 7.Anything else you can think of? I’m so use to Alaska’s laws being so lenient. I hope it’s not as bad as I’m thinking it is down there, or is it? I want to know what I getting into before I find out the hard way! Thanks for any help! |

What parts of what city should I be looking at? (I don’t mind commuting anywhere up to 2-hours or so) Mcdonough is in Henry County, which is basically south atlanta. You're going to cry and land prices. Most people join a club here. If you don't mind driving 2 hours, that opens up some more options, particularly farther south. 3.Is suppressed weapons legal to hunt with down there? yes (i am pretty sure this was part of 60, someone else can chime in). 4.Any restrictions on Steel core penetrator ammo? most public ranges do not allow steel core. 5.Any restrictions with Magazine limits? Nope. 6.Any regulations on personal body armor? ??? 7.Anything else you can think of? I’m so use to Alaska’s laws being so lenient. I hope it’s not as bad as I’m thinking it is down there, or is it? Not on school property.(but in your vehicle) Don't know about property, if you got money to buy you can find. look to the south toward Macon. yes, hunt with suppressors. no restrictions on steel core ammo, unless range prohibits it. no restrictions on mag limits, unless you are hunting. no body armor restrictions that I know of. I've answered your questions below in red as I understand them with the new laws going in effect July 1st.

I sure it close to the same up here: No carry in bars, federal building & school grounds, if in contact with LE let them know your status. But anything else I should know? Can carry in bars with permission, government buildings without check-points, and can have a weapon secured in a lock box or rack on school property. Must have a permit to carry or can carry on private property with property owner's permission. You can carry in state AND federal parks in GA now. Can't carry past security checkpoints in government buildings, including the airport, and can't carry with-in 150 ft of poling places, at mental health facilities, or in courthouses. 2.I would Like to own property that I can shoot on, is this a realistic option somewhat close to McDonough? What parts of what city should I be looking at? (I don’t mind commuting anywhere up to 2-hours or so) Couldn't tell ya. Sorry! 3.Is suppressed weapons legal to hunt with down there? I think it passed that you now can after July 1st. 4.Any restrictions on Steel core penetrator ammo? Not that I'm aware of! 5.Any restrictions with Magazine limits? Yes. If you have limited capacity magazines, you will be restricted to your home until you can replace them with high cap stuff! :) 6.Any regulations on personal body armor? Not that I'm aware of! 7.Anything else you can think of? I’m so use to Alaska’s laws being so lenient. I hope it’s not as bad as I’m thinking it is down there, or is it? GA is pretty good on the gun laws for now. It's a good place to live! I want to know what I getting into before I find out the hard way! Thanks for any help! |

But anything else I should know? There will be others much more qualified than myself to post up I'll take a stab at it. You can carry in a bar as of one week from today. You can carry into a government building provided it is not restricted or screened by security personnel. Basically you can carry pretty much into every building unless it tells you otherwise. (I don’t mind commuting anywhere up to 2-hours or so) Since you're on the southside you should stay on the southside. Driving through Atlanta is terrible during the week unless its between 9pm and 6am. I know little to nothing about the southside except for a couple of places along I-75. Quoted:
3.Is suppressed weapons legal to hunt with down there? Yes, as of next tuesday, July 1st. Quoted:5.Any restrictions with Magazine limits? No. |

It would probably be better for you to go online for GA Gun Regulations and Hunting Regulation after some of the answers I have seen so far IE not exactly right. GON is a good resource. www.gon.com Georgia has NO REQUIRED CWL. You can get one or don't get one. The main difference is that you can not legally carry concealed without a CWL. It is perfectly legal to own and transport firearms in Georgia without a CWL (but without the CWL, you must transport them according to the law, in the truck etc). A CWL just makes it easier and legal to carry concealed where allowed. As for hunting, as of July 1, 2014 suppressors are legal to hunt with if one legally owns a suppressor IE you registered and paid your tax stamp. You can hunt deer with a 60 round magazine if you so wish as there are no restrictions except on Shotguns so no hunting deer with street sweepers or Saigas with 12 round mags. Idiots up North don't understand that once you pull the trigger and the weapon goes BANG, the deer is either down or gone and after that it doesn't matter how many rounds are in your magazine because nobody gets more then two shots off at a White Tail (its usually only one, but some of those 3Gun and tactical guys just can't stop making follow-up shots). Only restriction I can think of about body armor in Georgia is its illegal to wear during the commission of a felony. You can have magazines as big as you like, No Restrictions. Steel Core and Penetrators are fine. Only ammo issues in Georgia that I know of all follow Federal Guidelines. So if its not on the Fed's List, I believe its OK in Georgia. Again, I suggest checking the Statutes and Internet for exact answers. Shooting on your own land depends on the City and County you live in. Most cities have laws against discharging firearms as do some counties close to and/or part of Atlanta. One of my hunting buddies lives in McDonough but outside the city limits (just has a McDonough mailing address), he and is LEO neighbor zero their rifles off his deck as the county allows shooting as long as you are X feet away from any road and X feet away from any other home. Now for the Gotcha, most counties have wording that allows the officer to decide if your shooting is hazardous. So if an officer rolls up, explain what you are doing and follow his direction and you will probably be leaving in you own vehicle. The other option is to buy enough land that it doesn't matter. If one is in the middle of 50 acres, who is calling the law? |

In other words you can drive around with a beta mag in your ar while it's hanging on your Yeehaw gun rack in the rear window. Basically you can keep a loaded pistol under your seat, in the glove box, door panel, or center console legally. You don't "have" to tell any LEO about it if pulled over unless he asks. I'd suggest that you tell him first thing though. Makes things go a lot smoother and quicker when you have nothing to hide. |

I've had a Roswell PD officer recommend that you only tell them if you believe they'll be seeing the gun, he says not all of his brethren are likely to be hospitable to gun owners, even if it is an individual right, so why escalate the situation? |

Mine are both kept on my visor so I don't have to do so :-) (especially since my center console has a gun safe built in). |

Roswell's bow tie wearing douche mayor is also one of the few mayors in GA that is part of Bloomberg's MAIG group. Their police force has become offshoot of NYPD, which is sad because this is my hometown(now in Woodstock). Most of the officers I see there nowadays look to be young and fresh out of the academy which indicates they are not only having trouble maintaining experienced officers but the young ones are easier to indoctrinate. Sorry for the thread hijack but Roswell is becoming an anomaly in the GA gun rights landscape. |

I absolutely agree that since there is no requirement to notify law enforcement of a firearm, don't volunteer the info. If asked, it would be wise to answer truthfully.
While Georgia is a great state for firearm owners, not all cops are gun people. For every "I told him I had a gun and we chitchatted about guns after he wrote me a warning" story, there are several "I got removed from the vehicle at gunpoint" or "my firearm was seized for no reason" stories. I have been on the other end of the latter. Education and attitudes concerning firearms have been improving over the years, but there's a chance that you'll ruin your own day by giving information that isn't required. There's nothing to gain by doing so. The only time I'd say something is if you have a firearm near the information you have to give to the officer. In that case, the best plan is to have everything out and ready by the time he gets to your window. |

If you step off your property or out of your car without a license you're setting yourself up for some bad juju. Also, there is no duty to inform LEO that you're carrying. It's the courteous thing to do, but you're not legally required to. |

I don't know of anything that might validate your statement that their "police force has become an offshoot of the NYPD..." I am very familiar with one of their higher (HIGHER) ups and I know him to be pro-2A. Their Chief also has a great reputation in the community AND in the law enforcement community. EVERYBODY is hiring young officers. I am not aware of any metro ATL agency "indoctrinating" officers to be anti-2A. Well they may have erased that part of my memory form police academy class after they zip tied us to chairs and taped our eyes open in front of the big movie screen were they played videos of riot police stomping on innocent children and shooting dogs set to heavy metal music.
