I was reading today about how some counties do a Sheriff's Reserve Unit comprised of volunteers. I found that Cobb county has one, but there's not any real info about it.

Anyone here know more about the program and want to give me a run down? Is it comprised of getting coffee/bitch work or are there some cool aspects?

About the only way you can join cobb's reserve unit is to be retired from there. That's what a buddy of mine told me who retired from Cobb

When Sheriff Hutson was in office at Cobb, all you had to do was donate so much $ to his re-election campaign.........that got you a Reserve Deputy badge.  Guy I used to work for was his campaign treasurer, so he automatically was a Reserve Deputy.

No idea how it is handled under Sheriff Warren.

A Sheriff can swear in anyone he/she wishes as a deputy; however, one has to be POST certified in order to have arrest powers.

Columbia county also has this program, mostly retired military folks

Cherokee County has a Reserve Unit.  You have to be POST certified though (you can do this on your own dime), and provide your own GLOCK 22. http://www.cherokeega-sheriff.org/Reserves.html

Due to op sec (social media policy), I can't tell anybody where I work, nor can I confirm that a particular reserve unit is a good group of people to work with. But, having worked with a group of reserve five-oh, I gotta say I appreciate them a bunch!

A guy who works for me is going through the program now. No previous LEO experience. I've had to do the interview calls with the Investigator checking him out. Not sure what he'll actually end up doing as a Reserve, but he's sure going through a TON of red tape to volunteer his time.
