I bought a Millett 4-16x50 30mm tube off the EE.
I would like to mount this to my rifle as low as possible. I a Savage Hog Hunter in .308 with a Redfield 20moa base. I am leaning towards the Warne Maxima or Vortex Optics rings. Thanks |

1. Mount your base to the rifle.
2. Stack washers (or pennies, nickels, quarters, etc) in even stacks on the mount about where your rings would go. Build the stacks up until you get the scope at the ideal height that you want. 3. Take one of the washer stacks and measure the height (preferrably with calipers). I made a chart of the heights of all the Picatinny spec quality scope rings. Let me know what height you come up with and I'll give ya a list of the ones that will work. If you don't have calipers, use pennies and let me know how many pennies are in the stack. I'll measure a similar stack and figure it out. |

I'm about to do the same thing i think... I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP ....30 MM tube. Putting it on a Hogan 308 with hunter rails (no picatinny down barrel for lower scope)
I don't have the gun yet so i may just take it to somewhere like dawsonville gun and make sure it fits. |
| FWIW, I'm pretty uptight about getting my scopes mounted low. On my bolt action .308, I'm running a NF 5.5-22x50mm in NF low rings on a TPS 30MOA base. My setup is so low that I had to shave some plastic off my Butler Creek scope cover to clear the barrel. As long as I can see daylight under the objective, I'm happy! |

It is going to take 8 pennies and 8 is the absolute lowest we can go. So what do you think we can go with ? |

I measured 8 pennies and came up with .462".
Here's what my chart shows: Leupold Mk4 High: .469" TPS TSR Medium: .484" Smith Enterprise Medium: .500" Badger Ordnance High: .534" Nightforce High: .535" Everything else is either too low, or goes up in height from the Nightforce Highs. |

I thought I was the only one anal enough to shave the Bulter Creeks to fit... I try to get scope bells within a dollar bill thickness of the barrel. I carry a bunch of $6 elastic ammo holders to slip over the stock so I can build up the comb for shooters at our events. The single biggest issue I see is poor cheek weld due to high scopes. Either the scope is mounted on too tall rings, or it is as low as it can go and the stock comb is too low to catch the cheek bone solidly. It is not called a "JAW weld" for a reason. Some closed cell foam and an elastic ammo holder can fix that. Often makes a huge difference to the shooter, once they have three solid points of contact, weak hand on the end of the buttstock at the shoulder, strong hand on the trigger, and a solid cheek weld. combine that with a support (bipod or pack or whatever) at the very front of the forend, and the mechanics are in your favor. |

Well dang I was hoping it would help with comb height... seems It would have too to me because the comb height on the hog hunter is very low. Still going to wait i would rather not have to buy something and have to return it.
