Starting to load for 223 and was wondering what the favorite loads and powder choices for loading the 223 are on the HTF

I have this stuck to my bulletin board as a load to try, found on ARFCOM. This is a quote from an unknown member here, passing along information that AeroE has posted a number of times. I still haven't loaded any up, but I will be soon.

I call it AeroE's accuracy load for 223.

He claims this load will show if you have an accurate barrel or not.

Win case, trimmed to 1.750, Rem 7 1/2, 27.0 grs Re-15, 52 gr Sierra MK, OAL 2.250, NO crimp.

For me 5 shots go into a half inch at 100 yds, some will go into the .3 zone.

My go to plinking / carbine class load is 25gr H335 under pretty much any 55gr FMJ I can get cheap.  The Hornady's are the best, often going sub-moa with that load and CCI SR primers.

Tac is a great all purpose easy to meter powder.

My generic MOA load for all my precision AR's is:

68/69gr or 75/77gr match bullets from Sierra or Hornady
Any brass, trimmed and prepped
CCI-400's
Varget (24.5-25.5gr)
RL-15 (24.2-25gr)
TAC (23.8-24.2gr)
2.255" COAL

If you can't find a great load from that, start over with a new barrel.

24.0gr of TAC under a 75gr BTHP is hard to beat.

But, work up your own loads. Mine work in my rifles, I don't know about yours.

24 grain TAC under hornady bulk pack 75 grain HPBT is my all around go to. Can get match grade accuracy, hunt, plink. home defense load in a pinch. Shoots well and functions well in all my AR's. I give slight crimp with lee factory crimp die. As with anything work up to your own pet load don't start here.

Everyone needs to go back and put their price per round cost on all these loads.....

I think its a bit irrelevant. Today's cost of components is no comparison to what it was purchased for.

If you want I can tell you about the guy who gave be free LC brass so long as I paid shipping, the free blem bullets, or and the .03 cent pulled SS109s of 2005 though.

You could but .... that would be only good for padding your post count

My little pig trail I always walk in is:

LC brass trimmed.
77 grain Sierra Match King
CCI Benchrest Primers
Around 25 grains Varget.  (varies a bit on different rifles I load for precision, one load is 24.3)
One multi function die for depriming, sizing, redding comp die for seating.

Like someone else says:  If that won't shoot well, get a new barrel.  (or hold harder)

My super-anal rounds:
Sort brass by weight
Deprime with universal deprimer
Uniform primer pocket
Clean
Resize outside only with Redding comp sizing die with the center removed
Measure/trim as needed
Chamfer inside neck
Inside sizing with Lyman inner sizer
Clean
Prime
Powder
Seat bullet with Redding competition die
Measure

If those don't shoot well, you are cursed by the evil spirit of the "ocho", and should take up golf.

I think that only really matters for rounds you are just going to shoot stuff with.  For precision, it's just going to cost you money.  For all the time it takes to get settled in on the 600 yard line, you migh as well toss a few bucks at your ammo.

Cheap load?

Pulled 55's, brass that was not good enough for match loads, or is 3x fired, buckets of pull powder, wolf primers. Load em on a progressive, and shoot em up.

Here's mine:

Wolf SR Magnum primers
24gr Varget or 23.6-23.8gr TAC
77gr SMK

Pretty much any case will do, as long as its prepped correctly.

Similar to others, I've shot for the last 5 -6 years using:

24.0-24.5gr TAC
77 Nosler or SierraSMK's
LC brass
CCI 41 primers

I buy in 8 lb power cans, 1K bullet boxes and cases of primers and it keeps costs down. I was stocked up before the crunch and haven't had to restock yet, so price is still economical.

(I also bought 1K 55gr or 62 gr after each of the presidential debates. The writing was on the wall.)
