We're driving through Georgia and staying overnight in Atlanta and I need to know a decent suburb to stay in. Currently we have a reservation in College Park and it looks like that isn't a place you want to be. Can you recommend a place for us to stay?

Yeah stay away from College Park. Get outside of 285 before stopping for the night

ACCCKKKKKKKK...

You coming down 75?  Stay in either Kennesaw  or NORTH Marietta north of the city.  Were are you going to?  staying on 75 or going down 85?

Staying outside of 285 is a good idea, unless you have bucks for a good hotel in town.

The drive with no traffic from Kennesaw / Marietta to safe areas on 75 south of town in the Stockbridge or slightly further south is about an hour.  Depends on what time you want to stop.  I am more familiar with the North Atlanta area, I am not sure how the hotel areas in the south are, but College Park, East Point, Forest Park are shitholes.

The plan is to drive from MN to somewhere around Atlanta by the evening, then drive the shorter distance to Orlando the next day. My SIL has a friend that married into money and I think they live in Kennesaw so that must say aomething, maybe we'll shoot for that. We'll have three carry permit holders in the car but after seeing the crime stats for College Park it looks like that won't be enough

Are you taking 75 or 85 to Florida? If you are taking 85 Newnan maybe a good place to stop. It's not much farther than college park. Just east of Newnan is Peachtree City that would also be a good place and it's not too far off the interstate

Scrub College Park off of your destination list.  If you are coming down 75, stay on the Northside of 285.  I would suggest no deeper into the city to overnight than Cumberland area in Marrietta.  Otherwise, plan for your stop off in Kennesaw.  Maybe stop off and hike the mountain before hitting the road to Orlando.

An uparmored Humvee with a beltfed would be appropriate.

Kennesaw has a pretty new Embassy Suites with Ruth's Chris in it, as well as a plethora of other restaurants.  A  new Hilton Garden Inn,  an old Hampton Inn, a Wyngate.  All close to 75.  The Holiday Inn Express is up against the highway, so it will be loud, and the Red Roof is a shitty place.

Any type of food you all like?

Awesome, I'll look into those then! There will be eight of us and most like almost anything, a few are extremely picky, what can you recommend?

There are the typical chain restaurants, of course.

Red Lobster, TGIFridays, Chilis, Bahama Breeze, Tilted Kilt, Outback, On the Border (tremendously awful Mex if you like real Mex)

Out of the Chains, I like Copeland's cajun and Carrabbas italian,  the best.

More local flavor:
Marlow's Tavern,
Papi's Cuban (really good cuban run by an Anti-communist)
Olde Towne (for good to great burgers and sports bar)
Elevation Skybar and Chophouse at the local airport (a bit slow and expensive, but you rich, big spenda)
Penang for great malaysian
Ippolitos or Provinos for Italian
Kuroshio for good japanese noodles and sushi
Taco Mac for beer and burgers, but the ownership are raving anti-gun assmunchers.
El Nopalito for cheap but decent mexican
Dickey's BBQ, .....bbq has petered out a bit in the area, sadly.
The Varsity for the best worst food ever.  One chili slaw dog and you feel like you banged the big girl in high school, but she was good at it.
Golden Corral if you need to vomit and get the runs to fit in your bikini.

That should get you started.

Stay outside 285 but NOT on the West side because there's nothing good about Fulton Industrial Blvd @ night.

I'd suggest going South from College Park until you hit Newnan or Lagrange. Either that or stay on the North side somewhere. Oh and bring a gun. Loaded or not GA is cool with it being in the car.

College Park. I laughed. Only because you almost died and your wife almost left you and or you almost had to shoot a few crack zombies.

You now owe the GAHTF a life saving debt since you had reservations there and you no longer do.

I have to admit I did snicker a bit when I read the op. college park .lol

Glad you asked in the ghtf. I would stop on the north side and enjoy not being robbed.

That is a lot of driving. I recommend stopping in valdosta to stretch the legs also, If you do get off on exit 18. Unless you want to do some outlet store shopping then try lake park at exit 5. Both of which have chick fila I would recommend if you don't have one.

Yep, I-75 to the Florida Turnpike to Orlando, about 7.5-8 hours from Kennesaw.  The hotels others have mentioned in Kennesaw are all near Town Center Mall, around exits 269 and 271 on I-75.  Reasonably safe area, although we do get the occasional dirtbag that hasn't figured out that folks up here tend to have guns and the police tend to be rather energetic in their efforts to keep the riff-raff out, so don't completely lower your guard, but in 15 years living in the area, I've never had an encounter, and I'm in that area every day for lunch or dinner.

College Park Isn't the zoo in that area as well?
Either way, Kennesaw/ North Marietta is the way to go.

Mntn. Zion isn't a bad exit to get off of south of the city...  safe areas and decent food / hotel options.

i'd suggest staying in Kennesaw if you're going to get going either BEFORE or AFTER rush hour (going through the city DURING rush hour will add an easy 2 hours to your drive) and stay in Mntn Zion area if you're planning on moving around 6-9am.  Just remember you're going to hit traffic in Macon around 8-9 also...

OP, HTF just saved your life....College Park is a no-go area. On the northside would be better, Kennesaw is a good safe area to stop for the night assuming you're coming down I-75.If you want to get on the 'southside' before stopping, Peachtree City would be my suggestion.

I'm one of the in-town crowd that always laughs at the hand-wringing over crime in "the city;" even I wouldn't stay in College Park... This was great OP; thank you...

I am glad you were steered away from College Park.  I am glad your family has you in it, to find out about these things.

I spent a lot of time living in East L.A.    I avoid College Park if I can.   Nuff said?

As others have said Kennesaw would be a good stopping point.  You have several hotels off Chastain Rd. (exit 271) and some more on Barrett Pkwy  (exit 269).  Lots of choices to eat at within 1/4 mile in just about every direction.  If you drive past there, you're going to need to go at least another 45 minutes IMO to get well past Atlanta before I'd stop to sleep.  So unless you want to go another hours or so, I'd stop in Kennesaw.

You've got Sleep Inn, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn, Embassy Suites, and Best Western all off Chastain.  Off Barrett Pkwy you've got Holiday Inn Express, la Quinta, red Rood inn, Days Inn, Wingate Wyndham Inn, Hampton Inn.  And those are all the hotels within 2 or 3 blocks of I75.

Search any of those hotel websites with those street names (or zip code 30144) and you'll find plenty of options with relatively safe areas, reasonable gas prices (fill up there before heading south) and food options galore.

From those hotels, without traffic, it's 6.5 - 7 hours to Orlando, unless your family needs to stop for pee breaks every 40 minutes like mine does..

Hoe you have a safe & fun trip!

Use to live in Fayetteville.
The new hotel by the high school is nice, but Fayetteville is kind of away from the interstate. (and honestly, I use to live there for a reason. I think I saw that like the 3 old ladies got jumped by kohls in the Pavillion. Clayton/Riverdale is slowly but surely coming south. I got the hell out while I could, matter of fact I believe my ex house rep is a liberal )

My vote would be for a nice(ie pricy) place downtown or Kennesaw.

It is but it isn't. Around the Courthouse where the hotels are is a nice area. Getting over to 85 is a breeze he would only have to take 92 or just go to the racetrack both ways shouldn't take more than 15-20 min.

go far enough south of the city so you don't mix with traffic when you leave but not so far south that the motels will be mostly truckstop/budget style however. Eagle's Landing area is a really nice place to stay if you are looking for a little better than motel6...
