44 Rossi in Macon

Where I get most of my crack, er toys.

FWIW, if you want a Marlin, get ready to come off your wallet some, and buy a JM gun.

I was in there Friday looking for C&R Milsurps.  They didn't have anything I wanted but I saw the lever actions on the rack and thought about asking if any were in pistol calibers.  I've thinking about getting one for a long time. I 'm pretty sure I want a .357 because I want a matching single action revolver to go with it.  I 'm not that comfortable with .44 mag in a handgun.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I found a small shop in Winder called The Gun Room that had a few Rossi and Marlins in stock.

That's a cool little shop.  They'll usually have the lowest price if you order something from Davidson's and have it shipped to them.

I've also been considering a lever action lately, in .45 Colt or .44 Mag (got both).

How are the prices on the Marlins, not sure if I want a Rossi.

Yes please!  I'd love to have one of the limited stainless marlin trappers with the 16" barrel!

I would hold out for a pre-remingon Marlin if they are in your budget. Check he EE here and on MarlinOwners.

Here's a couple of 45-70's, the stainless was cut to 16 1/4".

Love my leverguns. I own some from Marlin, Winchester and Rossi and they're all good.

I've got a custom 16" heavy octagon Win94 in .30-30 that I use as a truck gun. Also, a custom Marlin .444 18" that I use for hogs. My Rossi is a 20" in .45 Colt, "pre-safety" that I've used for Cowboy Action shooting for about 15 years now. The Rossi is scary accurate with my cast lead handloads.

About your Rossi in 45 lc.  I have one that is just as old and it consistently shoots low, about 6 inches low at 50 yards and I have to adjust the rear sight up a lot to compensate.  I've also filed a bit off of the front sight.  How does yours shoot?  Also it doesn't matter if I'm shooting cast target loads for the equivalent of 44 mag loads.

Did you get a newer gun with safeties or an older gun without them?

I bought one of the new ones with the safeties. Was $430 before tax so not to bad and MUCH cheaper than I had found any Winchester or Marlin 44 mags. Im going to use this as a starter lever gun for me. Going to try and shoot it in the next few days.

Well I couldnt help myself. Found a 1969 Winchester model 94 in 30-30 for cheap so picked it up too! These lever guns are already addicting.

If they make them in .410, do they make them for other calibers of similar length?

I'd like to have a rifle caliber lever action, such as a .270 Winchester.  I thought I found one using Google, but could not find it again on a second search.

It seems that the design would somewhat limit the length of the available calibers.

I'm very unfamiliar with lever actions, so bear with me here.

Browning makes lever guns in .270 along with several other common rifle calibers.

As stick says, with just a couple of obscure exception, the browning BLR is going to be your about your only option for modern cartridges. It uses a box mag. Tubular magazines and spitzer bullets are a bad combination.

Yep, in .270 the BLR is the only one I can think of that is still in production.

There are modern production Winchester 1895's in .270, along with .30-06 and .405 Winchester.  The .270 was discontinued in 1999 but you can still find 'em.......pricey, though.

The Winchester 88 is a cool levergun for modern rounds, but not the .270.  While they have been discontinued for quite some time, you can still find 'em used in .243, .308, .358 and .284.

The Savage 99 is available in several short action modern calibers, pretty much the same selection as the Winchester 88 plus the 7mm-08, at the top end of the power spectrum.  The rest of the calibers you'll find it in go down in power from the .308 (.300 Savage, .303 Savage, .250-3000 Savage, etc.)
