I have an interview for a job there. What can you all tell me about it? How are the schools? Shooting ranges?

flowery branch area is nice, decent school with good athletics. close to the lake for bass or river for trout. nice mall one exit away along with restaraunts. north hall is also really nice, but pricey. just stay above or below actual "gainesville" and you will be fine. where do you have an interview?

You might not want to actually live in Gainesville ... but maybe that depends on your ethnicity and lifestyle and financial status.
There are several great places on the lake. Hit Google Maps and zoom around.
Otherwise go West toward Northern Cumming and Dawsonville or go North a little ways from Gainesville to anywhere.

Cherokee Gun Club is in that area just to the Southeast. cherokeegunclub.org

Some area close to downtown Gainesville is a little rough.  Areas west of the city, on Hwy. 53 and 369 are nice, especially when you get close to Lake Lanier.

Cherokee Gun Club is less than 10 minutes from downtown Gville.  Nice gun club, very expensive and long wait to be accepted.  They shoot IDPA, USPSA, skeet, trap, bullseye rifle and tactical rifle matches.

Without giving up too much personal information, what area is the business you're interviewing with?

You dont want to LIVE in gainesville. North Hall isnt bad but kinda high. If you want more rural living go toward Jackson county which is close. (County line is 10 mins from hospital) Are you wanting to rent or buy a place ?

If you want to LIVE in Gainesville, I hope you speak spanish. If you want to live in the county, I would suggest Flowery Branch. Or just venture eastward into Jackson County.

That hospital is a good hospital. They have a nationally recognized cardic floor, and they pay more for RN's and techs than other hospitals in the area. My wife is an RN there. She loves it, except for the crazy folks that come in, but thats a different matter.

The southern schools in the county are far better than the ones around Gainesville. North hall is nice though. Jackson county has really good schools.

I think there are 3 gunstores in Gainesville itself, and some surrounding it. There's an indoor range in Oakwood and one in Flowery Branch.

I grew up in Gainesville, moved away to join the Air Force, just moved back this last year. It's a great town. North Hall has some great neighborhoods, and the school was top-notch when I graduated. I understand it's gone downhill ever so slightly since. I live out Browns Bridge Rd between Gainesville and GA 400/Cumming now. Our little community here is close-knit and patrolled regularly by the local five-oh. There's a fire dept right across the street. It's about as secure and nice a little community I could have asked for. The elementary schools are great (ours go to Chattahoochee Elementary), and there's tons of stuff to do hereabouts. Mine did swimming lessons at the local public pool over the summer and are now doing karate two days a week.

River Bend Gun Club is about 15 minutes from my house, and Cherokee Gun Club is about 30. If you want a WMA range, Wilson Shoals is up in Lula, about a 30 minute drive from Gainesville. (Need a GORP license through GA DNR, though).

Georgia Gun Store is my personal one-stop shop in G'ville. Mike Weeks and his wife are a joy to work with.

Definitely stop in, their main floor is firearms, the archery section is in the back.  They have some gun safes usually too.

I'd say normally (pre-panic) they're about 70:30 - black rifle:Fudd ratio.

Nice selection of suppressors, optics, ammo, accessories.  Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.  Prices are better on guns than most, although suppressors are a little higher than, say, Dawsonville.

I used Dawsonville for my Sparrow.

I work in Gainesville near the airport.  Gainesville is/used to be the largest poultry producer in the state.  Yes there are TONS of hispanics in Gainesville. Hell more than half the town has stores etc. with the signs being 100% Spanish. Example the Gainesville Walmart has a taxi standoutside of it that is used exclusively by hispanics, the Bank of America in Gainesville does not have a single employee that does not speak Spanish.  In fact I was there today and there was not a single customer in the bank that was not Hispanic.

My advice is if you get the job is to move to Braselton, Hoschton, Dawsonville/Cumming, Jefferson/Jackson county area.  All have great schools especially Jefferson City Schools and all are at most a 30 minute commute.

In short don't live in Gainesville

I'm late to this, but Hall Co. is generally nice.  As others have said, there are some sketchy areas in Gainesville itself but also nice areas.  Depending on what you want, you can find it reasonably close (urban, rural,  or subdivision, at any price point, either in Hall or neighboring counties).  Hall Co. is outside the Atlanta emissions testing zone, so you don't need to worry about that. Romney carried Hall Co. with 77% of the vote (but he got over 80% in most surrounding counties).  If you like trail running or biking, one of the best networks in the southeast is off Exit 16 on 985 (Chicopee Woods).

If you want to live North of G'ville, then North Hall Co, HAbersham, Banks counties. I live in banks.
If you want to live south of Gainesville, the you really can't beat flowery branch. Very nice location.
Do not live in Gainesville itself if you can avoid it. You will be outnumbered - mostly because you can read and speak English. I don't go south of exit 22 on the 985

Two words for you- chicken farms.  N. Georgia is a big chicken farming area (and was a large construction growth area), and the illegals flock here to work on the farms.  There is a reason Gwinnett County is nicknamed "Gwinnexico."  Forsyth, Cherokee, and Hall counties also have large Mexican populations.  Strict anti-illegal immigration policies by the local sheriffs have helped to drive some of them out, but most remain.  I live on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County, and I am outnumbered in my neighborhood.  The little MS-13 and Latin Kings wannabes and child predators keep my bayonet sharp, for sure.  The further away you get from the lake (at least on the Forsyth side), the better it gets.

This is not meant to be a gloom and doom statement, but if you come to North Georgia, particularly around Lake Lanier, be prepared to see a very large Hispanic population.

I think there are two poultry plants in Gainesville and it's known as a
major processing center nationwide.  About 20% of the population in
Hall and Gwinnett Counties is Hispanic, which is the highest (or nearly the highest) percentage in
GA.

Gwinnett County is 20.5% Hispanic, and Hall County is 26.8%.  Whitfield County has the highest Hispanic population in Georgia at 32.3%.  There are several counties in Georgia, both north and south, with Hispanic populations well north of 20%.  Most of them are far from any large urban area, so they do not get the same attention that Hall and Gwinnett do.

I had my interview at the hospital yesterday. They want me to have a phone interview with the CAO, but it looks good . The hospital set me up with a realtor to look at some areas and talk about buying vs renting.

I see what you all mean a about the Hispanic population.  It reminds me of the Fort Myers area of South Florida. I am also amazed how crappy the traffic is for a small town. We checked out Flowery branch and saw some really nice neighborhoods.

I am still waiting to see if the hospital is going to accept the salary I pit out there. They haven't even brought it up, but they paid my gas, food, and hotel for 3 days 2 nights.

I love when people quote numbers as fact when they are not. Yes there are some Hispanics but they are mainly isolated to the Atlanta highway area. The other parts of the county are much different. Look around like you said you are doing. Plenty of very nice safe areas to live. The hospital system is also building a new hospital in the Braselton area that is slated to open in 2015.

I'm in North Forsyth about 15 mins or so from Lanier and don't live around any Mexican pockets. Now get to Hwy 20 in the city limits and Cumming and that's a much different story. Tyson and Perdue both have processing plants in the area plus there's a few manufacturing plants around so they're here for the work. Out my way which is West where the OP wants to be, I have mostly Bubba's which is fine with me.
