My wife has bought from CarMax twice. Both were great autos. Both were pretty pricey. No real deals there, but we've got our money's worth outa both vehicles. YMMV! This. I've bought 2 from them, including my current. Could you maybe get a better deal elsewhere? Maybe. But I think you have a much less chance of getting a bad deal with them via a bad car. And their trade value is usually better than fair. In both cases I had quotes for trades / sales from multiple other dealers / places and CarMax gave me the better deal in both cases by a substantial amount. Plus they do give you a 30 day warranty. So if you are trading, you'll get a better overall deal IMO. Plus their CS is very good. The latest purchase has a few minor non-mechanical issues and they fixed them all, though I'd have not expected them covered by the warranty. All in all a fair place IMO and I'd recommend them. |

I'm a mechanic and help people buy cars all the time....
My advice: Stay FAR away from carmax.... ...And take CarFax with a grain of salt...... I use and HIGHLY recommend AutoCheck ..90% of cars are bought and sold at auction.... CarFaxdoes not report auction findings.. At auction, cars are required to have a pe-auction inspection... This is reported to AutoCheck, but not CarFax.... Run the vin of ANY car you are considering BEFORE even wasting the gas to go see/drive it... You would be surprised the number of red flags you will find... I'd say 40% of used cars on the car lot have frame/unibody damage, or salvage titles... Look for consistent mileage on the report... you don't wanna see it registered when new with 2 miles on it... and then the next transfer with suddenly 90K miles... Stay away from fleet/rental vehicles and dealer owned vehicles... Dealer owned + involved in accident = no report has to be filed... they fix it on their own time/$ AutoCheck AutoCheck AutoCheck http://www.autocheck.com |

You should take a look at the changing tax laws if you buy before or after march 1.
If you buy from an individual before Mar.1 you do not pay anything to the state other than title fee. you should look up the specifics related to your purchase. I plan to buy from an individual before Mar. 1 to avoid 6 - 7 % state tax. |

Excellent addition... I forgot to mention that...
My wife got totaled out in our old 1990 mazda early last year.... She got a used car from a lot just before summer... Total sales tax paid exceeded 6.5%, so after March 1, 2013 she can "OPT IN" and will not have to pay advalorem tax every year. |
