[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Saxby Chambliss not running again (Page 1 of 2)

They just announced that Saxby has decided not to run for Senator.
Personally, I'm ok with it as long as we get a REAL conservative in there instead of just another RINO. |

I was just coming to post this. The solid opposition to him was already mounting. He knows that his ass was gone during the next primary. I just hope that he doesn't sell us out as a lame duck. That's what I'm most concerned with. Final term, not running for re-election. Will he sell us out to be popular (and maybe offered some plush job afterwards)? It'll be interesting to see where he lands if he doesn't fully retire. |

Has anyone gotten a response back from his office on his opinion of the awb2013 bill? Dear Mr. Shaw : Thank you for contacting me regarding the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban. Your taking the time to contact me is appreciated . As a parent and grandparent, there are no words to describe my grief at the senseless loss of life at Sandy Hook Elementary School. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Newtown, Connecticut community, and all of the victims, families, and loves ones of this horrible tragedy . I join the rest of the nation in offering my prayers to all of those impacted. In response to this and other tragic and high-profile acts of violence, there is a renewed focus on this expired legal provision. I believe that Congress will have an extensive and detailed debate about all of the potential causes of these tragic crimes, including mental health issues, depictions of violence in television, movies, and video games, and firearms. Your comments are important, and I will remember them as the debate moves forward. On September of 1994, Congress passed and President Clinton signed into law the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act" (P.L. 103-322). This legislation prohibited the sale of certain semi-automatic weapons, often referred to as the assault weapons. On September 13, 2004 the ban expired. I have always been a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, and I will continue to ensure the rights of gun owners will not be further infringed upon. We must make certain that the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens are not infringed upon. I believe that the ability of sportsmen, hunters, gun enthusiasts and citizens concerned with their personal safety to own a gun, whether for sport or protection is clearly defined in the Constitution and must not be compromised. I know that dialogue regarding acts of violence will likely result in a wide range of legislative proposals seeking to address the underlying causes. As these pieces of legislation come before me in the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind. |
Excellent example of a politician using a lot of words to say precisely nothing on where they stand on the specific issue. Why specifically list out "hunters and sportsmen"? If you're truly a supported of the 2nd Amendment it doesn't matter what the firearm is - you support it. He mentioned the expired ban and the 'talks' about to take place and says nothing on his position. He could have made his reply much more simple be just saying "thanks, I received your message". It says the same thing and uses 322 less words.
Yea, I smell a sellout too.... |

Came here to post about his announcement.
Here is the email I got back from him, very similar to above; Thank you for writing me regarding the right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Your taking the time to contact me is appreciated.
I have always been a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, and I will continue to ensure the rights of gun owners will not be further infringed upon. We must make certain that the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens are not unfairly impeded. I believe that the ability of sportsmen, hunters, gun enthusiasts and citizens concerned with their personal safety to own a gun, whether for sport or protection, is clearly defined in the Constitution and must not be compromised. In response to recent tragic and high-profile acts of violence, there is a renewed focus on government regulation of guns. It is likely that Congress will soon have an extensive and detailed conversation about all of the potential causes of these crimes, including mental health issues, depictions of violence in television, movies, and video games, and firearms. I know that dialogue regarding acts of violence will likely result in a wide range of legislative proposals seeking to address the underlying causes. As these pieces of legislation come before me in the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of assistance to you in the future. Both our senators are worse than worthless. His leaving is a good thing for liberty/ conservatism going forward. The problem has already been identified, just how badly will he screw us on the way out, now that he no longer has to pretend to be a conservative. The thing we MUST ensure is that his replacement is nothing like he was. i.e. a real staunch patriot. A GAHTF guy should run.

As someone who went to an engineering school, I'm personally hesitant to support someone who claims evolution, embryology, and the Big Bang are "lies straight from the Pit of Hell!" He's a Young Earther, believing that the Earth is only 9000 years old, in the face of all of the science contesting that claim. He may be good on gun rights and some other conservative causes, but he's let his religion overcome his brain. |
|
Wait. So he axially actually gave real answers when asked a question instead of the typical political while lotta words but never answers the question, and you do NOT like him because here believes differently than you on that topic?
At least you knits where hr actually stands. And for the record i to went to (and graduated) an engineering and it sounds like he and i would agree completely |
|
Sorry guys, I would *reluctantly* pull the lever for Broun. But a politician should know better than to alienate half of his constituents with a speech that would never sway anyone that was already not a true believer. And further, alienate those who might be inclined to agree with him secularly. I think he's an idiot. There has to be a better candidate out there.

If I recall correctly, I believe he made that quote to a Baptist publication and the main stream media got wind of it and blew it WAY out of proportion. Yes, he DOES have a tendancy to call a spade a spade, and he pretty much refuses to pull his punches. He's called out Obummer on several occassions where the MSM either does its best to either ridicule him or brushes him under the rug. However, I have not found anything to dislike about his voting record to date, though I do have to admit he is a bit of a lose cannon and could stand a little "seasoning." |
|
I had met Tom Price several times and have had some interesting one on one conversations with him. I personally would like to see some one like Herman Cain (who I voted for instead of Johnny) run. Since he ins't, I would definately vote for Tom Price, given the current selections.
What I would really like to see is some one who will put the intrests of Georgia ahead of those in Kalifornia and other welfare states, while keeping us economicly and Constitutionally protected. |

Notice we did have all the jacked up issues in this country until God was forced out of everything, i just look at science like, all these amazing things in life couldn't have just happened by chance, but that's just me. i really feel like ARFCOM would rail against our founders if they were alive and in charge today. Paul Broun doesn't take away your rights, he supports them |

I would much rather vote for someone who is moral and has these values than someone with no values. I'm not going to get into a pissing contest on this issue but this country was founded on Christian beliefs and values and when they are all taken away it will be sad day for this country and the world. |

What in the world does going to engineering school have to do with any of this? Does that make you an expert in science? What type of engineer? I was an engineer and the hell, Id make a stupid comment like that.
|
| I want a candidate who keeps his religion to himself and governs solely on the constitution. I want a candidate who actively works to repeal bad and/or unnecessary laws. I don't care what books you read or what superstitions you follow, don't subject me to them and ill give you my vote. |

I have no problem with Christians or Christianity, I'm on very good terms with my uncle, a Presbyterian minister, I DO have a problem with people of ANY ideology who get locked into a narrow-minded interpretation that ignores all contradictory evidence, especially when it is based on some very creative parsing of said book. As for the Founding Fathers, while they were Christians, they did not allow their faith to overcome their intelligence or education, which was typically quite extensive. |

They are not truth and many have been proven wrong over time yet there is nothing that has ever come out to disprove the bible. I'm not going to derail this thread any more than it has. There is no need to act like your theory is absolute and bash others who believe different. |
|
Yeah, if you guys want people to not think of you, and treat you, as a lunatic fringe you might want to learn what the difference is between the colloquial use of the word theory and the specific terminology of scientific theory and what makes a scientific theory a theory.
And the bible has only not been proven false because it is not testable as a theory and theories can only be falsifiable. That is why religion requires faith with no basis and science requires a basis with no faith. Though sadly, some people insist in putting their faith in science which is equally incorrect. |

I guess you skipped the day they went over scientific theory in 7th grade science class? A scientific theory is "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment."
