I SWEAR TO GOD, I HATE THE POST OFFICE!!

I think it's a big game for them to see who is the slowest clerk, who can pawn the next person off in line to another clerk, or who can keep someone the longest at their counter either by starting trivial small talk or asking if you want more than just a stamp.

It seems to me that they are intentionally slow or they intentionally ignore you when they see you are hurried. I guess no one is ever concerned about the forming line in fear of being an over achiever and ostracized by their peers by making them look bad. Eventually the line will go away one way or another.

If I wasn't such a cheapskate in mailing crap, I would NEVER go to the post office... AGAIN!

End Soapbox:

Have a great day!

While most of my experiences lately with the post office have been good, I have been there and agree!

This is why I went out & invested in a postal scale and now do 95% of all my postal mailings via USPS's website now.  You can create your box postage right online and then give it to your postman/postwoman who delivers your mail.  Never have to step foot in a USPS office.  The only time I need to go into the office is for overnight, insured or certified mail, which is very little of what I mail.

Though when it comes to government bureaucracies, I'd be thrilled if we could get even 1 of those 3 on even a semi-regular basis...

I've seen both, it is HIGHLy dependent on the individual clerks in question, there's certainly no overall management push for quality service, even doing things like letting people take their breaks while the lines are backed up.  Strangely enough, most of the ones I've seen do well have been prior service...

We've had mail take 4 days to get delivered when sent from within the same county.

There is a little post office annex in the Hispanic grocery store not far from my house.  No line, cute Hispanic chick helping you with your mail, no extra charges above the regular post office prices.  Amusing music, and you can get a Dr. Pepper and some fresh tamales when you are done.  I approve of the post office.

I almost posted this exact same thing a few days ago- I went to the post office to mail foreman2000 his "pay it forward/Merry Christmas" MBUS.  I walked in with the MBUS in a small plastic baggie and his address, assuming that I could pick a shipping method and box, and that the USPS would stamp or mark the postage on it.  Oh, hell no.  After waiting in line for 15 minutes, the [rude] clerk told me that I would have to pick out the packaging (a bubble bag) off of the wall, put the MBUS in it, and get back in line.  Slightly annoyed, I went to the wall, picked out the bag, put the BUIS in it, wrote foreman2000's address on it (with the Sharpie in my pocket, because they won't do that either, but they will sell you a marker!), and got back in line.  Fifteen minutes later, I get back to the clerk, who I assumed would do some Pitney Bowes action and stamp the correct postage on the bag.  Shit, no!  The clerk tells me that they can "sell me the stamps," but that I would have to ascertain how many it would take to mail based on a scale and some chart, place the stamps on the bag, and then GET BACK IN LINE to hand it over for mailing.  At this point, I asked in a very unfriendly tone, "what exactly do you do here besides waste peoples' time?"  I threw a couple dollar bills on the counter to pay for the mailing bag and walked out.  I left my 93 cents in change but I was so mad I didn't give a shit- that was the cost of getting away from that clerk before I lost my friggin' mind in the middle of the post office.  I went to the UPS Store down the street, walked right up to the counter, and a very courteous lady put the package on a scale, stamped the correct postage on the bag, charged me the exact amount, and put it in the "out" bin FOR THE USPS.  I was in and out in 4 minutes.

ETA- foreman2000, you better enjoy the shit out of your MBUS.

It depends on where you go. I had great service at the Post Office in Perry, GA when I lived in Warner Robins. I get great service in the Post Office at Canton, GA and Waleska, Ga since I moved to Canton.
