I have no comments about what has happened today. But my thoughts and prayers are with the families.
My question is why do you not see more security in schools today ? Why can just anybody walk inside ? You cant even just walk in most businesses today but why can you just waltz inside most schools ? In my area they where about to cut the budget for SRO's in the schools. I wonder what they will do now ? |

In my area, the schools are reasonably secure. The front doors are unlocked, but you have to pass a kiosk to actually enter the school and they all have alarms they can activate. All teachers are supposed to stop and question anyone without a badge and you have to swipe your DL to get a badge. All other exterior doors are locked from the outside. I think that's pretty reasonable. I do think that EVERY school needs a police officer in it. I also don't think that it should be the same officer all the time, they should rotate duty in the schools daily to keep complacency to a minimum i.e. sit at the kiosk.
When we first moved to this area, the schools were completely unsecured, no kiosk, multiple ways into the school. My wife is a teacher and I complained constantly about it. Then the BOE hired a very squared man over school safety who complete changed the whole counties security policies and now I feel much more comfortable. I still think every school should have a uniformed police officer at the kiosk though. If we can't keep our children safe, why in the hell are we even focusing on anything else like running stop signs etc. (not that traffic law is not important). |

You can't in my kids kindergarten. There is only one door open from the out side. There is a receptionist right when you walk in. And each"wing" has locked doors as well and your code only gets you into the wing that your kid is in.
Now of course all security is got the most parts just for looks and useless for A determined criminal. |

I can go to my old HS on Monday (before what happened) and walk in the front door and continue to my old coach;s office and to my ag science teachers room. No problems and no questions asked ever.... I have done this twice in less than a year.
I promise you that you can do this in almost any school here in the Henry County area. 80% of all entry and exit doors are unlocked. |

In case you haven't seen this....
Newtown, Conn. School District Had Recently Installed New Safety Protocols |

Quoted:
It's a school not a prison. Stupid post. The difference is we want them to secure from people getting IN, whereas prisons are supposed to be secure from people getting OUT. Are you suggesting that the doors should all be unlocked and no security protocols set up at all? Even prisons have armed guards. These are children, our children where we are not there to protect them. And apparently nobody else is either. So what we are saying is that if you are going to put our children in an environment much like a prison, where nobody has guns, for the safety of each other. Then they need to go to extremes to provide security from predators like this. |

The Conn school had a locked door/buzzed-in system. The perp broke ouit the glass of the door and let himself in. What do you do about parents who buy unstable, austic, etc. 20;-yr-olds 10mm Glocks and M4s??? That is a question that needs to be answered. Did they belong to him or where the not properly stored. In my home the safe is locked and secured to the floor and is in a locked room. I have the only key and I am the only one with the combination. A schoolhouse should be set up like a courthouse with guards and metal detectors.(not so much for elementary students but visitors are a must) My favorite argument is "we don't want to send our kids to a school that is like a prison" "Our kids don't need to see that it is not good for them" All I have to say to that is WAKE UP and look at the world you are living in ! Take precautions now or pay for them tomorrow. |
| I would think that there are quite a good number of retired cops, soldiers, vetted and trained Dads/Grandpas and such that would not mind taking a day or so a week or two rotation at their local school. Give them a little tooth to work with, and I think we could change things. I am pretty sure that for any given school area, there are a few dozen older guys that like having a few hundred kids wave at them in the morning, and can still centerpunch a crazy guy when they have to. |

Than comes the argument "we dont have the funds in the budget for that" Well I guess you better fucking get some then ! |

I have written a response to this thread 3 times but decided every time to just delete it. I do not believe that I can effectively state what I want to say in just a paragraph or two. This is an extremely frustrating horrifying situation and honestly it could have been alot worse. The sad thing is I see it progressively getting worse.
Go to your schools and talk to them about their security. Meet your SRO. If you are not satisfied with either complain until you are. This is sad and disgusting; I could not even imagine what I would be feeling had I been one of the first officers on scene. My heart and prayers go out to those guys along with the families of the ones that were lost. there I didn't delete this one |

I don't have kids...only a 32 year old step daughter but I was an active competitive shooter, an active duty Army officer who spent years in combat units and now pay my bills as a machinist/gunsmith......and I would gladly volunteer 1 or 2 days a month to provide armed security at a local school if given the opportunity. I'm betting their are a lot mor people like me who would do the same.
It breaks my heart to know if one person had been allowed to carry a concealed weapon on the faculty a lot of death could have been averted...GUN FREE ZONES....pure stupidity.......and an invite to whack jobs...when will people realize this? As I've said before......with the number of nut jobs out their these days who are completely devoind of personal responsibility or a firm grip on reality....if I can' go carrying...I don't go. |

I wouldn't mind doing it if I had the extra time, But I have to pay the bills. The real problem I see in this situation is the children, I LOVE the idea of my children having armed guards. But I HATE the idea of some of the people I see at gunstores having guns around Not only my kids, But a school full of them. Even some prior military people I know are F%&KING IDIOTS, when it comes to safety and tactics. I was contemplating, If they had a small detachment of Military guys, say attached to the local recruiting commands who would just go be security at schools. Say 2-4 Marines/Sailors/Soldiers at each school, who lived in small secure building like an MSG/embassy guard. Who are trained to deal with stuff like this. It could even be a reserve duty, Where as part of your time, you spend say 2 days a month in uniform at a local school. Giving a show of force at the school, as well as letting the kids see that their Heroes work at home and abroad to keep them safe. Even on college campuses, with military that are getting a degree, and some ROTC guys. Hell, When I was in college, I would have gladly informed the school that I would be carrying, if they would have let me do it. I doubt this would ever happen, but it would be the perfect solution. |
| Having been to private schools both elementary and high school, the security there is much less than some of the public schools I know. We had no security officers, checkpoints, or any of that. Only during my senior year they installed the electronic locks and all visitors must be buzzed in, but just about anybody can come in and that didn't work out well in that elementary school. |

Once again, we are looking for a solution to what happened in CT so it won't happen anywhere else. There are sound security measures that must be employed in schools and most of this is already being done, even before the shooting.
But these measures still wont stop an individual like the asshat in CT, they will only slow them down. Budgets won't allow 3 or 4 armed officers per school, thats just not going to happen. Make arming teachers a voluntary commitment and put them through force on force training with local law enforecment on a reoccuring yearly basis. Get 5 or six teachers per school and you have a good start at a possitive reaction to this incident. |

Perhaps a letter writing campaign to senators and representatives proposing such a logical well thought out suggestion is in order......I've always thought that former senior NCO's and Officers would be excellent candidates as deputy US Marshalls as well......I know I'd be happy to pay my way to training and an annual certification, and it would provide a huge resource to the security of this nation. |
