Which one of these look like it has the proper headspace for a .308/.260 barrel.  That is a .308/.260/.243 Go Gauge in both.

Number 1:

No way to tell......headspace gauges measure from the boltface to the other datum point, the other datum point being the shoulder on a 308. You have to have the barrel torqued on the receiver to measure it. Having said that, they both look short for any firearm I've ever chambered.

The second one appears to be closer to headspace compared to the first.  I imagine this is for a bolt with no protruding nose, like a savage-style bolt head.  If you had a remington-style bolt head, the headspace gauge would be just about flush with the "second ring of steel".  Typically, the rim, extractor groove, and a very small length of case protrude from the breech, like the second picture demonstrates. If the first were headspaced, it would likely have insufficient case support.  I'd snap a picture of the barrel I just finished, but I've already torqued the action onto it and I wanna go home.  : )

Both Barrels are for an AI action.

Number 1 is fubar.....which is the brand new barrel.

Number 2 is correct.

What kind if action? Are these prechambered barrels?

Accuracy International AX.

Number 2 is one of the mass chambered rifles that works across all AI rifles from the "factory".

Number 1 was chambered by a custom smith without the rifle.  Which is supposed to be an advantage of the AI action since they are all supposed to be within .001 of each other or something.

I bet that's SUPPOSED to be short chambered ......whoever installs it is supposed to finish chamber it. Unless an AI receiver is like a Savage, it would have to be since he didn't have the receiver.

Nope.  Was a fresh Barrel Blank.   The smith just screwed the pooch.

I'll give you $10 for it.

The part about AI rifles being barreled without the action stems primarily from the fact that the action is bonded to the chassis-  you can't test-fit the action on the threads or verify headspace without removing the barrel from the machine.  Yep-  headspace and other tolerances are indeed tight enough to make a barrel that will properly function without test-fitting.  The real fun comes when someone wants a fluted barrel indexed without test-fitting.  ; )

On the bright side, shallow headspace is an easier fix than the alternative!
