I'm sure some of you have done this already, but I was inspired by THIS thread.
I had a Savage single shot sitting in the cabinet. I've had it for a few years and never shot it. It had a 26" or 28" barrel. I don't remember which.
I cut off the barrel to 18.5" with a hacksaw, then finished it out with a metal file, a dremel sanding drum and some cold blue.
It handled much better but was really butt heavy, so I removed about 3.5" from the butt.
I reattached the original butt plate to the stock then ground it down to size with a bench grinder. It's 31.5" overall length and kicks like a mule.
Coming soon: Sling swivels Nylon sling with shell holders Krylon |

I have a similar shotgun that I bought in a box (you had to snap it together) about 30 years ago for 35 bucks. It has been the truck gun, the behind the door gun and a few other roles have been played as well. Yours looks great! |

Check out the pic from the thread I linked above: http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr220/pallymcgee/Shotty023.jpg the bed liner adds a nice texture to the stock, and the guy says it's paintable so he just painted his camo over it. Really like this. I have one, may have to give it a try. What does the barrel measure when it's broken open? Also, curious to hear how the bed-liner spray holds up. |

The barrel measures 18.5" from the breech face to the muzzle. I measured the outside of the barrel and marked it about a 16th longer. That gave some metal to work with to clean up my nasty cut job. It now measures dead on 18.5 when you close the barrel and run a tape down from the muzzle. |

i always wondered what I was going to do with that old shot gun I found in my grandmothers closet that no one wanted.....Thanks fellas
wonder how bad you all would bash me if I figured out how to put a rail and a breaching device on the front...and maybe an rmr. |

I'm largely copying that NEF above with my NEF 12ga. However, I'm going with a different color scheme on the metal and stock.
So far: -I've cut the barrel to 18.5", using a pipe cutter. Beware that this flares out the metal on each side of the cut so that you have to touch it up with a file if you don't want the outside wall of the barrel flared ever so slightly like a blunderbuss. -I've knocked an inch off the stock and filed the original butt plate down to fit, and re-drilled the holes for the screws. The battery on my cordless circular saw died mid-cut, so I had to finish it with a hand saw, then flatten out the curved cut that I made using hand tools. I really need a band saw or table saw. -I primed and then painted the receiver and barrel with a low-gloss black engine enamel. I've used this paint before on leather fire helmets, and it is good stuff. -I filed and sanded finger grooves on the buttstock, sanded both pieces of furniture, and sprayed them with bedliner. Up next, I'm going to paint the bedliner, then look into maybe a stock sleeve with a shell holder on it. I'd also like to find something to use as a sight. Some sort of fiber optic would be cool. |

When my son turned 2 Weeks old I bought him a Rossi youth 20g shotgun .22 combo. I think it was $80. Isn't this essentially the same thing? Its Tiney and a single shot. Best part is it also has am extra barrel.
Of course since he is only 3 years old I haven't done much with it. |

A couple of crappy, washed out cell phone pictures: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/footrat/093f9dda.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/footrat/dec38a30.jpg The furniture is Rustoleum spray-on bedliner covered in Krylon Camouflage green. Hard to tell the colors in the pictures. I may try to find a darker green down the road. The Krylon just isn't OD enough for me. It does blend well with the midday shadows, though. EDIT: Also, I fired a 2 3/4" #8 and a 2 3/4" 1 oz. slug to see how it felt. I remember why we used to call this thing the Painmaster. I might try to MAKE a recoil reducer, because it could use one, but there's no way I'm spending money on a commercially made one. And a butt pad. It could use one of those, too. Good stuff. I too expected the camo green to be more OD. I've read where some folks use an old flip-flop to make a pad. In keeping with the spirit of cheap DIY I think that's a good idea. ETA: Flip-Flop recoil pad |
