It's been years since I purchased a wheel gun, and I recently became interested in the big bore variety. About a week ago I picked up a S&W 629 and yesterday I purchased a model 500 magnum. Now if I can only find decent prices on 500 mag ammo

It's amazing how small the 44 mag looks when compared to the 500

yeah, i think you'll find that just passed the unicorn stables, but just before you get to that store that sells hens' teeth!

i like big bore stuff too, and was looking a NEF handi-rifle in 500 smith one time...i did some number crunching, and costs on rolling my own was somewhere north of $2/round using any kind of reputable bullet.  that was some time back, and things may have changed a little bit, but it was enough to talk me out of buying the NEF.

Back when the .500 S&W Special* was a hot topic, I came up with this "X-Frame Compact" concept with a shortened "Special-length" frame and cylinder and fixed sights . . .

Yeah, I had too much time on my hands. Photoshop is a helluva drug.

* 350 grain bullet @ 1250 fps from a 8⅜" barrel

I bought these in the last month:

Not a .44 mag or .500 S&W, but .357 ain't bad.  I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet though.

I DID, however, get a chance to shoot my 686 Plus, and I LIKE IT.

And you will probably find the 500 more comfortable to shoot.  At least I do
