Open mouth insert feet...

My church is going to do a BBQ fundraiser in Oct and I suggested doing a turkey shoot as a way of raising some money too.  So meet your new
Chairman of the Turkey Shoot Committee.

Yep, open mouth insert BOOTH feet.
All I know about turkey shoots I've learned from googling but I want to here from some of y'all that's been to one, run one or just think you have some good input to offer.

So far I have a target style we'll use...typical bullseye w/ an 'X' (not a 'cross hair') and scoring will be based on hits w/ in the outer circle & hits w/in the bullseye.
Ties will go to center hit count.  Ties there go to second target scores.
Target will be 35yards out.  Shooting from a standing position except for the little kids, they can use a bench or table.
Classes will be stock gun in 12g or .410.  If we don't use a .410 we'll use a 20g youth size.  Also if we use the .410 the range might be reduced to 20yrds.
Probably be $5 per shot for 12g & $3 per shot for youth.
Might also have a 'money' target or 'big prize' target at 50yrds.  I don't know about that one yet.
We'll supply the ammo and have shotguns for those that don't have one.  Most likely use a sponsor to either get Wally World bulk or get something decent.  Just depends.
SAFETY will be preached from the beginning to the end.  I want every one to leave w/ the same number of holes that God gave them.  I'll have a safety plan for just in case.
I'll be looking for local sponsors to help w/ the prizes, ammo and misc supplies.  So hopefully there will be no expenses just income.
Range layout will be a large open grass field w/ a very deep woodline as a back stop.  If I can use the layout I envision, the woods will be about 50yards straight back behind the target stands.  Then the shooting line 35yards up range w/ the registration tent between parking & shooting line about 25yards away along a 45degree angle to the shooting line.  If I have the room I'll have that wood line as far back as I can.  I would love to have a 100 yards behind the target stands.  A berm would be better but I don't think that is possible.  I'll ask but I'm not gonna expect it to happen.
All guns will be cased or actions open at all times unless on the line ready to shoot.  I might designate a 'safe area' like at an IPSC match for any gun handling.
I'll have 4 assistants plus me.  1 at registration, 1 running targets, 1 running shells, 1 judging targets and me as RO-Expediter-Coach-Safety Nazi-Dictator-Chairman of the Turkey Shoot Committee-HMFIC.  We'll see if this works out.
Tentatively I'll have 5 shooting lanes built up.  1 or 2 lanes will be designated as youth lanes, targets will be a bit lower & closer.  I'll have provisions for more lanes but not set up w/ targets, maybe just up rights & target backers.

We have a small church but we are planning on selling 850 BBQ half chickens w/ the fixens.  Also one of the members is a vintage tractor buff & he'll have his other tractor buddies there too.  So what I'm saying is there is potential for a big turn out & I don't want the turkey shoot to be hindrance to a) raising money for the church or b) a source of friction or pissyness.  Two of the big hurdles I see are, can we set up the shoot where we would like it and what are the insurance & liability issues?

This shoot is just in the planning stages and I'm just looking for some more input on this idea. If some of what I have typed just won't work let me know.  If something  needs to be tweeked, added or dropped let me know.  I would really like to pull this off with no issues, everybody have fun, go home w/ no extra holes, win some cool prizes from our sponsors & have it make some money for the church.

Thanks in advance,

How do you plan on cooking 850 BBQ half chickens

I prepared 100 quarter BBQ chickens for the church this summer for vacation bible school on my rather large pull behind smoker. I couldn't squeeze all of them in on a single cooking so I was forced to cook two batches..

I hope you have access to numerous VERY large grills or smokers.

GOOD LUCK...!!!!!!

That's good because the Turkey Shoot should be a breeze compared to 850 half chickens.

Been to a good many shoots. All were scored by the closet one pellet to the center. Shoot off between between individuals if there was a tie.
They furnished shells. Shells handed to you on the line as you were called up. Most ones I have been to had a target for each shooter but only one shooter on the line at the time. One I went to had one target on a pull line and ran a target out for each shooter one at the time. I went to one once everybody lined up and was handed a shell. Loaded on command after shells handed out and all fired at once.
Every shoot I have been to in GA you stood up no table to lean on.
Every shoot I have attend in SC had a table you could lean on.
Every shoot, except the one all lined up at once, allowed you to shoot anyone elses shotgun if you wanted to.
Never been to one yet that they even mentioned safety at but I have never been to one they had to. For some reason everyone at the shoots seemed to know what was expected. Not sure why or how.
I did go to one once that had a shotgun table that you had to lay all the guns on pointed down range. You only picked up your gun when you were called up to shoot. When you were through for the night you just walked off the line with it but it was empty then. It was probably the safest way I have seen.

This is good stuff and pretty well describes a couple of different ways to run a shoot.

GOOD LUCK......!!!!!
