For the police and military guys, what are you using for communication equipment? I am looking for some new products for our swat team to evaluate and am curious on your opinions. We are currently using a Peltor headset system, but i think there may be some better options out there and our equipment is getting a little dated.
If any of you guys have a good recommendation or any contacts with local reps, please let me know. |

I have a good friend that runs the SWAT team for Mobile County Sheriff's Dept. If you would like an introduction, please let me know, and I will be glad to introduce you. They evaluate and use some top shelf gear down there since they do border protection, maritime operations, as well as full law enforcement duties as part of their jurisdiction.

I ain't PoPo but I do have and get to play with some nice stuff. You may want to look at Silynx C4OPS and Nacre QuietPro. They are in the ear units that will interface with one or two radios simultaneously. You get the enhanced hearing just like you do with peltors or sordins but unlike the over the ear units your head and ears don't feel like they are trapped in their own personal sauna from hell in our wonderful Georgia summers. You also won't need one of those side cut helmets anymore to clear the big earcups since they aren't there anymore. Getting shot in the grape versus the helmet, I'll let you decide what that's worth to you. If you need a low profile hearing and comms then these units are the ticket. The ear buds look like your're jamming to an ipod. The control unit is small and relatively easy to hide too. The last added benefit I can think of is they have multiple PTT options including wireless units that can be rail mounted. The downside is they are much more complex to operate and expensive at $2k+ per. You don't just throw them on hit the switch and go. You put them in, turn it on, it runs a test to verify you have a good seal on the plugs, then you go or take them out, reseat then reboot till you get it right. When you first start wearing them they are uncomfortable if you sized the ear inserts right. After a while you and the inserts will break in and you won't even notice them. It is Crucial that you use the right size inserts. Go to small and they won't seal worth a damn. Go to big and they'll make your head ache like a mo fo and you'll loose seal because you'll be dicking with them trying to find a comfortable way to wear them.
FWIW I have a Nacre QuietPro set. Once you read the frickin manual and get used to wearing the ear buds you'll never want to go back to over the ear headsets again....unless it's really really cold outside. YMMV. |

Commo guy here. We use SINCGARS RT 1523Fs for vehicle line-of-sight comms, but for purposes most like what you would need we use Harris PRC 150s and PRC 148 MBITRs.
Tech specs for the PRC 150 can be found here. Same for the MBITR is here. EDIT: in hindsight, these may be a little overkill for you guys... but they're interesting tech if you're into that stuff. |
| We also use the MBITR for body comms in tactical situations. They mesh well with any FM capable mil-band radio. If you're on a SWAT team or any tactical response element looking to go cheap then go with the MBITR. But we are shifting more and more towards Harris radio body comms such as the PRC 150 and associated man portable radios |
