A buddy of mine is taking a pistol training class and wants to get a new Glock 9mm to use in the training. He already has a Glock 22 and a 26 at this time, but wanted a larger 9mm for the class. He has had his eye on one for a while, but wants to use it for the class because the 9mm offers lower ammunition costs, less recoil, and faster follow up shows. Plus he has a Keltec Sub 2000 that takes Glock 17 magazines.
He really likes the Glock 19, but I wanted to get some opinions on if you think a Glock 17 would be a better choice for a pistol class. His holster he has will fit both the 17 or 19 properly (Safariland 6378) so either way he won't need additional gear. If you were going to take a pistol class where you would shoot 1000 rounds, which model would you want to have with you? |

What are his needs outside of this one class? Either would be fine id think. If he wants something for carry, I'd think the 19. If he's happy with the 26 for carry, I'd go for capacity with the 17. I can't see buying a gun just for a class.
The cheapest option is a simple mag extension for the 26. |

If it is for practical handgun use (e.g. daily carry), use what you plan to carry daily. That goes for caliber too, IMHO. Pick the best tool for the intended task. |

17/19/34 - take your pick
If it's a dedicated range gun, the 17/34 have the largest frame with the 34 having an extended slide. If he's going to consider carrying it, the 19/17. My two primary Glocks are a 19 and 34. I carry the 19 and have the 34 as a range/competition/other use pistol where the longer sight radius offers a little more benefit. |

I'm late in this game but say just pick what feels best to him and go with it. You can't go wrong with any of them.
I own 26/19/17/34 (some in multiples). The real question is, "Why would he buy a gun just for a class?". I find it better to take a class with whatever gun you actually use/carry/game with/etc. That's really what pistol training is ... learning to shoot/run the gun/work out the kinks/etc. It's very artificial to train with one setup if that isn't what you will actually be carrying or using in a defensive situation. |
